Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant. Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated. The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego. San Diego (KGTV)- People in North Park say they’re fed up with rushing water and flood damage from recent water main breaks. There have been at least four major water main breaks, since 2017, in the same area. The latest break over the weekend was located on Myrtle Avenue near Park Villa Drive. Neighbors were left without water for almost eight hours. They tell 10News they have been trying to get the city to fix the lines in the area for years. “In the past 12 years, we’ve had seven… five on my street, two on the side streets,” says neighbor Linda Nelson. Nelson has been living in her North Park home since 1980. She says they’ve had some breaks in the same spots. “What happens is they patch it up and then a year or two later it breaks where they patched it.”The city says the concrete pipe was over 50 years old. They are in the process of replacing all cast iron pipes around the city. Then they will then assess the concrete ones. The city hopes to have all the cast iron pipes removed by 2023. But with a fast-growing community, neighbors feel the infrastructure in areas like North Park should be first on the list. “They want more apartments on the transit lines, which mean North Park,” says Nelson. “If they increase the density and they don’t fix the infrastructure that we have that just puts more pressure on it. Until they can make it right for the folks that lived here for a long time, I don’t think we need any more people.” 1457

San Diego will seek to invalidate its landmark pension law, a citizens' initiative 65 percent of voters approved in 2012.The City Council voted 6-3 Monday to go to court to invalidate 2012's Proposition B, which switched most new hires from a pension to a 401(k) style plan. The decision came after multiple courts ruled the city skipped a key step in the campaign. The courts said then-Mayor Jerry Sanders' involvement meant the city needed to meet and confer with unions, but didn't. The courts required the city to make employees whole plus a seven percent penalty, but didn't invalidate the law. The city will now to go to court along side its employee associations to get it off the books. "It's illogical for the city to believe that having broken the law in order to get Prop B into the charter that you should be allowed to keep it in there," said attorney Ann Smith, representing the Municipal Employees Association. Firefighter John Hernandez II said he's seen a number of his colleagues leave for other departments, which offer better benefits - namely a pension."In my line of work, we can't work as long as most people, and that's why we need pensions," he said. But Councilman Scott Sherman, who voted to protect Prop B, said ultimately going back to pensions could cripple the city. "Every single year we make a 0 million minimum payment on our pension debt from the old system that too us to that point, and now they're asking us to go right back to that system," he said.Sherman said it's low unemployment, not a lack of benefits, leading to the city's worker retention issues. Former City Councilman Carl DeMaio, a major proponent of Prop B, said he would seek to defend the measure in court. 1722
