It was a rare disagreement between a teenager and his mother that was shared in front of Congress and the public in a hearing Tuesday. “With my mother, it wasn't she didn't have the information, she was manipulated into believing it,” high school senior Ethan Lindenberger said in the hearing. Lindenberger told senators how he grew up believing vaccines were harmful and how his mother would not allow him to get vaccinated.“As I approached high school and began to critically think for myself, I saw the information in defense of vaccines outweighed the concerns heavily,” he said. When Lindenberger turned 18 a few months ago, he defied his mother and got vaccinated. A U.S. Senate committee invited him to share his story during a hearing that discussed what's driving outbreaks in parts of the country, mostly blaming it on those who don't get vaccinated. Doctors and Congress spent the hearing talking about the importance of vaccines, especially among children. An overwhelming majority of parents vaccinate their children. However, polls have shown public support of vaccine has fallen and according to the CDC, the number of children under 2 who have not received any vaccinations has quadrupled in the past 17 years. “I used to work in the pharmaceutical industry. This is why I question vaccines,” says mother Brandy Vaughn, who has chosen not to vaccinate her son. Vaughn criticized Tuesday’s hearing, saying those who question vaccines did not get a seat at the table. “We tried to put them on the witness list, and there's no room for anyone that has anything negative to say about vaccines. Yet, an 18-year-old teenager, without absolutely no background in any kind of science or vaccines, can testify in the hearing? It's outrageous,” Vaughn says.Doctors today blamed social media, in part, for spreading false information about vaccines and encouraged concerned parents to turn to pediatricians, not the internet. 1942

KENOSHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin high school student said as soon as she read the first question on a school handout, something did not feel right."The first question on our sheet was 'What could Melissa have done differently to have avoided her sexual assault?' Like what could she have done to avoid her sexual assault? She didn't do anything. So, it was shocking for us like we didn't really know how to respond," said Bradford High School sophomore Haven Eigenberger. She said she and her classmates shared similar reactions, but did not say anything to their teacher at first because they did not think it would go anywhere. Eigenberger held off on doing the work and brought it up with her mom."I was disappointed when I saw the question because it goes at it in the wrong way, and it can actually trigger or re-traumatize somebody who's been through it," said Charity Eigenberger. Her mom shared the worksheet on Facebook Wednesday night. It has since been shared more than 12,000 times as of Saturday afternoon, drawing lots of reactions."Here’s what my answer would have been: 1. Not 2. A 3. Damn 4. Thing! 5. STOP VICTIM BLAMING!" one person said in response to the post.Charity Eigenberger said Bradford's principal called her the next morning and said the assignment had been pulled. 1305

In 141 years of records, Earth has not had a hotter January, according to NOAA data released Thursday.Last month, a trend of record or near-record-breaking temperatures continued, as January 2020 topped January 2016 by 0.04 of a degree F for the title of hottest January on record. The four warmest Januaries documented in the climate record have occurred since 2016, NOAA said. NOAA data showed that the contiguous United States had its fourth-warmest January on record last month. Nearly the entire nation had above-average temperatures in January. The Northeast U.S. had well above temperatures. Globally, Eastern Europe and Australia had exceptionally warm temperatures in January. 698

It's looking more and more likely that the United States soon could face its first tropical threat in the young 2019 hurricane season. On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center increased the chance to 50% that a system could develop in the Gulf by the middle of the week. Depending on your computer model of choice, the ensuing system could pose trouble -- or worse -- from the Florida panhandle to southern Louisiana. While it's still too early to tell if this system will get strong enough to be named (that would be Barry, by the way), more interesting is "how" this could all come about. For the most part, meteorologists vigilantly scan the Gulf or Atlantic Ocean from June to November for signs that low pressure systems are developing with the potential to strengthen.Turns out that average date of 814
