ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Fruitful results have been achieved some one year after the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Chinese envoy and Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told Xinhua here on Friday.Liu was in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to attend the 16th African Union (AU) summit as special envoy of the Chinese government.During the FOCAC ministerial meeting held in November 2009 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the Chinese government announced eight new measures of promoting Sino-African cooperation.Since then, China has been actively implementing various programs and projects according to the eight new measures, Liu said.The “China-Africa Science and Technology Partnership Program” and the “China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program” have been launched, Liu said, adding that the aid program of agricultural demonstration center is in smooth implementation process.Meanwhile, China is actively working on establishing the China-Africa partnership in addressing climate change, and is strengthening communication and coordination with Africa on the issue of climate change, Liu said.The Chinese envoy added that various programs and events such as the China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation Forum, the “African Culture in Focus 2010” activities, and the “20+20 Cooperation Plan of Chinese and African Institutions of Higher Learning” have been launched or successfully held. DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland formally launched bilateral talks on a free trade agreement Friday.Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese Commerce Minister Cheng Deming said the agreement talks between China and Switzerland have attracted huge attention and interest from the countries' leadership and business communities.Cheng expected a successful conclusion of the FTA negotiations. Cheng said a free trade agreement would enhance mutual trust between the two sides and promote economic development and closer ties between China and Switzerland.Swiss Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Ammann expressed similar aspirations for the agreement as did his Chinese counterpart."The free trade agreement would further enhance trade and investment relations on a mutually beneficial basis, but also create many new opportunities for close exchange and cooperation," Schneider-Ammann said.China and Switzerland have seen fast-growing bilateral trade and investments for decade. WASHINGTON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, ending its nearly 27-year flying career as the world's most- traveled spaceship.According to NASA, Discovery touched down at 11:57 a.m. EST ( 1657 GMT) after a 13-day resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."For the final time: wheels stop," Discovery's commander Steven Lindsey called out as the shuttle rolled to a full stop.Discovery lifted off on Feb. 24 from the Kennedy Center and arrived at the space station on Feb. 26.During the mission, the astronauts installed a spare closet module on the space station, completed some important repairs and delivered the first humanoid robot, though it will need more time to be assembled and made operational.The 330-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. Once it is unpacked -- likely several months after its arrival at the station -- it will initially be operated inside the Destiny laboratory for operational testing, but over time both its territory and its applications could expand.Aboard the station, its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space. However, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.

KAMPALA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The deadly Ebola hemorrhagic fever has broken out in Uganda, killing one person and leaving over 30 others being monitored by health officials, ministry of health announced here on Saturday.The epicenter of the outbreak is in the central Ugandan district of Luwero located about 50 km north of the capital Kampala.According to Anthony Mbonye, head of the community health department at the ministry of health, a 12 year old girl in Zirombwe Sub-county developed symptoms of Ebola and when she was admitted at a military hospital in the district, laboratory test confirmed that it was Ebola.The Ebola virus is highly contagious and causes a range of symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, generalized pain or malaise and in many cases internal and external bleeding.The girl died on May 6 and about 30 people who she got contact with are being asked to not get into contact with the public as health officials monitor them for about 21 days.The 30 people have not yet developed the symptoms but if they do, they will be isolated from the public.Mbonye said that preliminary investigations have showed that this Ebola virus is similar to the one that broke out in Sudan, thus named Sudan Ebola.The epicenter of the outbreak is also located along the high way to southern Sudan.This viral subtype has a human case fatality rate of 60 percent meaning that it will kill 60 percent of the infected people.The other subtype is the Congo Ebola which also attacked Uganda in 2007. This one has a human case fatality rate of over 80 percent.The 2007 outbreak which occurred in the western district of Bundibugyo bordering eastern Democratic Republic of Congo claimed 37 lives out of the 148 infected.Mbonye said that there also ongoing investigations to find out whether the index case got into contact with moneys or bats, the known reservoirs of the Ebola virus.Following the outbreak, government has reactivated the National Ebola Task Force (NETF) to coordinate the fight against the disease at the national level.District task forces are also in the process of being formed according to Mbonye, who is the chairperson of the NETF.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's search giant Baidu has pledged to remove all unauthorized literary works from its free online literary database Wenku within three days.After receiving requests from copyright owners to remove their works, Baidu has sped up its process of checking for unauthorized items. The unauthorized works were uploaded by Internet users to Wenku without prior approval from the authors, a spokesman for the Chinese search engine giant said in a statement.In the statement issued Saturday, Baidu apologized for what has "hurt the feelings of a certain number of writers" during Wenku's previous stage of operation, according to a report published Sunday by daily newspaper The Beijing News.Baidu said it respects copyright laws and will continue to cooperate with publishers and writers to establish a revenue-sharing model that will ensure that copyright owners receive a share of revenues from online versions of their works.Hailing Baidu's move to remove the unauthorized works, Wang Yefei, deputy head of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Copyrights hopes that Baidu and the publishers should work together to find win-win methods of mutual cooperation, according to the newspaper.However, some writers involved in the copyright row are dissatisfied with remedies Baidu has so far taken.Shen Haobo, CEO of Beijing Motie Book Co. Ltd, one of the six negotiators representing writers in Thursday's negotiations, told the Beijing Youth Daily that Baidu apologized only because of public pressure, but it did not mean to alter its current operation model for Wenku."Without changes in the operation model, the unauthorized works, even if removed now, could be uploaded again sometime later. Besides, it's unacceptable that Baidu reiterated that it had not infringed on our copyright," Shen was quoted as saying.Popular writer and blogger Han Han posted an open letter he wrote to Baidu's CEO Li Yanhong in his blog, indicating that he might take further actions to uphold his rights if Baidu's stance remains unchanged.Baidu's online literary database Wenku is an open platform for online resource sharing. It has been in operation since 2009.More than 40 Chinese writers posted an open letter online on March 15, accusing Baidu of stealing their works and infringing on their copyrights. Baidu's Wenku database was blamed for allowing literary works to become available online without the authors' prior approval.Baidu was asked to make a public apology, compensate for the writers' losses and halt any cases of copyright infringement.
