The 4-year-old boy was among 11 people hiking the North San Diego County trail Memorial Day when the 80-pound female mountain lion attacked him. The alleged bribes reflect the growing cost of ensuring students have their pick of higher education. As a teen advances through high school, the costs mount from college prep, tests, application fees, and social events associated with the milestone of graduation. For families in San Diego, where the median income for a family of four is ,400 according to the city's website, many of these options are not financially viable. But the city is working to fix the issue, replacing more than 100 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes.According to city documents, since 2013, San Diego spent 8 million to repair and replace 116 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes.A total of 72 miles of those repairs were on cast iron pipes, the oldest ones in the system. "We have more than 3,000 miles of pipeline," said department spokesperson Brent Eidson, "To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes."Throughout the project, older pipes made from concrete or cast iron are being replaced with new PVC pipes. Edison says PVC is the industry standard. Pipes made from the material usually last between 50-75 years.The city says its water system extends more than 400 square miles and moves roughly 172 million gallons per day. The decision comes just three weeks after the resumption of in-person troop meetings had been approved.Christa Sherman, Troop Support Manager for Girl Scouts San Diego, told ABC 10News the decision is the responsible one and is widely supported by troops across the county. "Our Girl Scouts are so resourceful and they really want to do what’s best for their communities, for their schools, for their troops," Sherman said.Both the national and local organizations have been building up their ability to support virtual meetings since the beginning of the pandemic. Troop leaders have access to lesson plans and videos. They can bring necessary materials to drop off at scout's homes before the meetings."We’ve had better attendance at meetings, which is crazy, virtually then sometimes when we were meeting in person," said Elise Hilliard, a troop leader in the South Bay.Even camp-outs are now being done virtually.
