WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new Gallup poll found Americans are increasingly willing to be immunized against the novel coronavirus. With two COVID-19 vaccines now in the final stages of approval in the United States, 63% of Americans told Gallup they are willing to be vaccinated. The latest findings come from a survey conducted in the last two weeks of November, which was around the time Pfizer announced their vaccine had proved to be better than 90% effective in its Phase III clinical trials.Since then, Moderna has made a similar announcement and both are seeking emergency use authorization from the FDA for their vaccines. If approved, some Americans could begin to receive vaccines before the end of the year.At 63%, the public’s willingness to be vaccinated has nearly rebounded to the previous high of 66% in July. It hit a low point of 50% in September.Gallup says reports of adverse reactions and statements from politicians may have contributed to the change in American views on vaccines.Specifically, Gallup points to President Donald Trump saying in early September that a vaccine could be available before Election Day, raising questions about pressure being put on the FDA to expedite approval. They also point to Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who said she wouldn’t get a vaccine on Trump’s advice alone and expressed concern about the potential for political interference in the vaccine approval process.“The public's willingness to receive a vaccine in September suggests that public confidence in a vaccine can be significantly influenced by events or political messaging that cast doubt on vaccines' safety,” said Gallup. 1649

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The seven-day rolling average for daily new coronavirus cases in the U.S. rose over the past two weeks from 52,350 to more than 74,180.That’s according to data through Wednesday from Johns Hopkins University, marking a return to levels not seen since the summer surge. The rolling average for daily new deaths rose over the past two weeks from 724 to 787.Positive test rates have been rising in 45 states, according to the COVID Tracking Project. Fifteen states have positive test rates of 10% or higher, considered an indicator of widespread transmission.Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Adm. Brett Giroir said earlier this week the proof of the uptick is the rising numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. The U.S. leads the world with 8.9 million confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 228,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic. 877

Washington insiders are predicting a much higher than usual turnout for the midterm elections, and a lot of big companies are helping voters get to the polls! Uber and Lyft are among those offering free rides. But it’s not just big companies doing a good deed on Election Day. One woman, Cheryl Fleming, is personally taking voters to the polls, calling it her civic duty.Despite the wet weather in Virginia today, Fleming is behind the wheel, volunteering her time to voters."Pickin’ up folks and taking them to the polls, insuring that they have no excuse," says Fleming. There’s a reason why Fleming is doing this. Over two decades ago, she had a felony conviction on her record and was stripped of her right to vote. But in 2016, that right was restored. She was 54 years old when she cast her first ballot. Now, she's making it her mission to get people to the polls. One of Fleming’s passengers on Election Day was 70-year-old Marine veteran Joseph Crouch, who has a similar story to Fleming’s.“When you're an ex-felon, you feel isolated and locked out,” says Crouch.Crouch’s voting rights were restored four years ago, but this is his very first election. He says he has Fleming to thank for getting him to the polls.“She’s a fantastic person, Crouch said.“For her to step up like she’s doing, that’s fantastic.” 1323

WAYNE COUNTY — Four children were killed when a semi struck a car that was slowing in a construction zone on an Indiana interstate Thursday evening. It happened shortly after 5 p.m. on eastbound I-70 in Wayne County, about 70 miles east of Indianapolis.According to Indiana State Police, troopers arrived to find a Chevrolet car and a semi pulling a box trailer both on fire, just west of a construction zone.State police investigators believe the truck did not slow down when it came upon slowed traffic near the construction zone and slammed into the back of a car, pushing it into another semi.Witnesses told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that the driver of the semi that struck the car from behind was operating in an "erratic manner" prior to the crash. Investigators say evidence revealed that stopped traffic was not a contributing factor to the crash.Preliminary toxicology reports indicated that the driver had multiple drugs in his system at the time of the crash. He was arrested and lodged into the Wayne County Jail on the following preliminary charges:Four counts of reckless homicideFour counts of operating while intoxicated causing deathOperating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injuryIndiana State Police say a passerby was able to pull the driver of the passenger car out of the vehicle, but none of his passengers.State police say four children inside the vehicle were all pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as:Anesa Noelle Acosta, 15Quintin Michael McGowan, 13Brekkin Riley Bruce, 8Trentin Beau Bruce, 6The driver of the passenger car, a 34-year-old man with a Kansas City, Missouri, address, was airlifted to Indianapolis where he was admitted to the burn unit in critical condition, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. The driver of the semi is a 33-year-old man from Ohio. He escaped his burning truck and was taken to a hospital in Richmond. The driver of the second semi was uninjured. The preliminary criminal investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office indicates that drugs were a contributing factor in causing the crash and that criminal charges are forthcoming.I-70 eastbound remained closed nearly 12 hours and was reopened around 5 a.m. Friday morning. This story was originally published by Katie Cox at WRTV. 2300
