BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The two-day 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was concluded here Saturday with participants reaching consensus on global financial crisis and other issues.     The meeting, attended by leaders and representatives from 45 Asian and European nations and organizations, realized its expected goal and was a great success, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in a closing speech.     As one of the most fruitful achievements, a statement of the 7th ASEM on the international financial situation was adopted at the meeting. The two-day 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was concluded at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Oct. 25, 2008.    "Leaders believed that authorities of all countries should demonstrate vision and resolution and take firm, decisive and effective measures in a responsible and timely manner to rise to the challenge of the financial crisis," said the statement.     The international community should continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation and take effective and available economic and financial measures in a comprehensive way to restore market confidence, stabilize global financial markets and promote global economic growth, it said.     According to the document, leaders supported the convening of an international summit on Nov. 15 in the United States to address the current crisis and principles of reform of the international financial system.     The summit also adopted a declaration on sustainable development.     "The adoption of various cooperation proposals shows and proves again the interior impetus for strengthening dialogue at the ASEM and great potential for extending cooperation," Wen said.     Amid the global financial turmoil, the ASEM has been widely regarded as an opportunity for Asian and European leaders to find a solution.     French President Nicholas Sarkozy called the meeting very "helpful" for Asia and Europe to tackle the global financial crisis and build up common cause.     "We had discussed nearly all of the topics concerned by the two continents including the most difficult issues," he said at a press conference at the end of the meeting.     Premier Wen told the press conference the need of confidence, cooperation and responsibility to find a solution to the global financial meltdown.     "We are glad to see that many countries have made their efforts and achieved some results. But it is not enough as we now see it, and more endeavors are needed," said Wen.     All countries, especially developed ones, should take measures as soon as possible to stabilize the financial market and build public confidence, he said.     Financial innovation could help develop the economy, but financial supervision is even more important for the security of the financial system, he added.     The premier also declared that China would actively attend the Nov.15 financial summit.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for creating more domestic needs to keep stability of the country's financial market and economic growth.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark during his visit to Yulin city in northwest China's Shaanxi Province from Oct. 28 to 29. General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao (2nd R, front), who is also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, chats with local farmers about the corn harvest in Xiaojihan Village of Dajihan Township in Yuyang District during his visit in Yulin City of northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Oct. 28 and 29, 2008.He told the accompanying provincial Party chief Zhao Leji and governor Yuan Chunqing that the basic situation of China's economic development was still fine amid the international financial tsunami and the world economy's slowdown.     Government at all levels and the public should have firm confidence and be revivified to strive, the President told local officials. And government should make more efforts to create domestic needs, especially the consuming needs.     It also should intensify the fundamental status of agriculture in the country's economy, improve the economic growth methods and deepen the opening up and reform policy, he said. General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao (front), who is also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, visits the command headquarters of Jinjie coal mine during his visit in Yulin City of northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Oct. 28 and 29, 2008.President Hu made the visit soon after the 17th CPC Central Committee ended its third Plenary Session which had announced favorable measures for farmers, a move to inspect local implementation by himself.     In visiting a village of Yulin, the President promised to local corn planters that the government would gradually increase subsidies to croppers and raise the minimum prices of crops purchased from farmers.     Hu Jintao told the farmers to fully trust the rural land policy, to lease their contracted farmland or transfer their land-use right, which was just adopted by the CPC's session.     The new policy was expected to boost the scale of operation for farm production and provide funds for farmers to start new businesses.     Hu Jintao stressed that the transfer of the land-use must accord with farmer's own will.     In another village Hu Jintao told livestock breeders to rely on science and technology to expand their business and increase incomes.     Yulin city is rich in coal and a major producing base of carbinol and coal products.     During his visit to a coal mine, President Hu urged workers and administrators to increase their productivity and give more attention to the safety of production.     In the neighboring coal-fired power plant, Hu Jintao said that building a power plant close to the mine could reduce transport costs and pollution.     He encouraged the plant's workers to make all-out efforts to produce more power to be transferred to the country's eastern part, making more contribution to relieving the power shortage.     President Hu also visited a carbinol company in the city, which produces the fuel substitute, by refining coal. He hoped the company could initiate more independent innovations and create more use for the coal to diversify the country's energy consumption.     In the outskirts of the city, which borders a desert on China's Loess Plateau, Hu inspected one of the four forest walls planted to break sand storms and prevent soil erosion.

MACAO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Saturday said here that Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) should promote its long-term economic diversification.     Xi, who paid the first official visit to Macao since assuming the office of Chinese Vice President in March 2008, made the remark when meeting with the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah and 113 representatives from all walks of the local society in the Macao East Asian Games Dome. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (R, front) meets with Macao SAR Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah in Macao, south China, Jan. 10, 2009.    Like the Chinese mainland and other places, Macao was hit by the impact of the global financial crisis recently and encountered some difficulties, Xi said, adding that despite this, "we should be confident as there are also opportunities and conditions for development."     Xi also said that the central government has launched a series of policies and measures to expand domestic demand and boost economic development.     "We are still confident that we can curb the further spread and impact of the global financial crisis and contain its damage, so as to achieve a new period of stable and rapid economic development," he said.     To ensure Macao's stable development in the face of global financial crisis, China's central government announced nine measures aimed to support Macao in six areas on Dec. 19, 2008. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (L front) inspects Macao Tower, the tallest building in Macao, south China, Jan. 10, 2009.    These measures mainly concerned promoting the financial and infrastructure cooperation between the mainland and Macao, the overall opening-up of the mainland's service sector to Macao, and helping Macao's small-and-medium sized enterprises.     He also pointed out that Macao's capacity in various fields has been greatly strengthened since its return to the motherland nine years ago, and the SAR government has relatively sufficient financial supply and abundant knowledge and experience of how to tackle the crisis.     As for the development of Hengqin Island, a part of neighboring mainland city Zhuhai, Xi said the central government has decided to develop the island, but the development will be launched only when preparatory works were fully completed.     The development of Hengqin Island will provide new spaces for the diversification of Macao's economy, he said, adding that the central government will take Macao's needs into full consideration.     Located close to Macao, Hengqin Island is about three times the size of Macao. The land-strapped SAR has long been requesting a part in its development.     Xi arrived in Macao earlier this morning, starting his two-day visit to the island city. Xi paid two visits to the SAR in 2001 and 2005 respectively before assuming the Chinese vice-presidency.
