TANGSHAN, Hebei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Tangshan, a Chinese city that lost 240,000 lives to a devastating earthquake 34 years ago, relived the pain and sorrow once again Wednesday on another anniversary. Not only Tangshan, the whole nation's memories of the catastrophe also came alive again as a film about the earthquake, "Aftershock", hit the big screen across the country.A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the industrial city in north China on July 28, 1976, which was believed to be one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century.Thirty-four years later, exactly on the very same day of the quake, Wu Ze, 46, came to a black marble wall that bears the names of all victims of the earthquake, including her sister's."I was 12 and my sister was 16 (when the quake struck). She was the smartest kid in the family and the best in her class. She was just gone overnight, " Wu said, unable to stop weeping."Every year on July 28, I come here for her," she said. The Tangshan government built the 300-meter-long wall, widely known as the Chinese "wailing wall", two years ago for the public to mourn those they had lost, as most of the dead were hastily buried in mass graves. The Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park, where the "wailing wall" is located, saw its busiest day of the year Wednesday as people streamed in to mourn for their beloved ones.An earthquake museum in the park also opened to the public Wednesday.Covering an area of 12,000 square meters, the museum displays more than 400 photographs and 600 pieces of articles about the 1976 earthquake.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development. The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.

URUMQI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were racing to evacuate more than 800 people still trapped by rain-triggered mountain torrents in a remote valley in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late Friday afternoon.Rescuers managed to reach the site in Kuqa County, of Aksu Prefecture, at 1:26 a.m. Friday, about 24 hours after rains and floods stranded more than 1,000 residents, construction workers and tourists in the mountainous area.As of 5 p.m. Friday, more than 170 trapped people, including 120 tourists and some 50 railway construction workers, had been taken to safe places. No casualties had been reported, said a spokesman with the prefecture's committee of the Communist Party of China. The locals dam up at a village of Alaer city in the upper reaches of the Tarim River, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, July 30, 2010. The Tarim River was hit by the largest flood in eight years on Friday. Some 100 more rescuers, carrying drinking water, drugs and food, had been sent to the site. The regional government had dispatched helicopters to drop food and bottled water to the trapped people, said the spokesman.Floods have inundated many roads, as well as damaged three bridges and 12 buildings in the county. More than 13,000 youths from the county were ready to strengthen the dikes to combat flood waters, he said.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Drenched riverside towns in central and southern parts of China on Monday prepared for even more flooding as water levels in the country's huge rivers surged and rainstorms continued. In its latest update, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said floods this year had left 823 people dead and another 437 missing as of Monday morning. The direct economic loss had mounted to 154.1 billion yuan, more than double that of previous flood losses incurred in any single year since 2000.Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local authorities to fully prepare for more floods and related disasters.More than 370,000 soldiers and residents now have been mobilized to beef up the flood prevention efforts in eight provinces and municipalities along the country's major rivers, the flood control headquarters said.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand more than 9 percent in 2010, Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), said Friday.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China, the central bank, made the remarks in an interview with China Reform magazine, which is posted on the SAFE website Friday.China's GDP grew 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010 from the same period of last year.Yi said China's economic growth rate will eventually slow down because its economic base is expanding, while the country's development faces huge pressure in fields of environmental protection, resources and energy."The restriction caused by environmental factors has been unprecedented, such as underground water, air, and carbon emission," Yi said.Yi said the priority of China's economy is the quality of the growth."That's why we have to restructure and transform growth modes -- for improving the growth quality and the efficiency," Yi said.
