SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steele Canyon High School is one of two evacuation sites run by the American Red Cross for people affected by the Valley Fire, but they're not housing people like they normally would. Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. This morning my husband made me coffee and I thought about my brand new coffee maker I got for Christmas. I get camping coffee to drink now, I don't think it's really set in." 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local leaders believe a significant number of homes that could help ease the housing shortage are actually vacant, and it may be time to consider a 'vacancy tax.'On any given night, amid the bright lights of the downtown skyline, are the not-so-bright, 41-story towers of the Harbor Club condominiums. Aaron Howe lives two blocks away."Just kind of empty and lonely. You see a few lights, but it's mostly dark," said Howe.Sources tells 10News, at various times in the past decade, as many as half the units have been vacant, meaning they are not a primary residence. It is sights like those dark units prevalent across the downtown area that have drawn the scrutiny of County Board Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Here's how much space you can rent for the median income in San Diego"I'm concerned that you have foreign wealth funds buying floors that are never occupied. I'm concerned you have people making investments in their fourth, fifth and sixth homes. To tackle the housing crisis, you can't just build something you call housing. It has to be something that actually houses people," said Fletcher. But just how many local homes stand empty? According to the the real estate tracker CoStar, San Diego's vacancy rate is about 4.5 percent. A healthy market is around 7 or 8 percent, but those numbers generally account for apartments, not single family homes and condos. Months ago, the San Diego Housing Commission directed staff to look into more accurate vacancy numbers, a first step that could lead to the proposal of a vacancy tax, similar to one enacted in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2017. "Housing prices were going up far faster than local incomes were. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo visitors are getting their first look at two endangered Amur leopard cubs born at the zoo in April.The unnamed cubs, born April 26, will have their first veterinary exam this week which will reveal the sex of the cubs."The cubs are climbing up on the rocks, they are getting into the trees, sometimes listening to mom and sometimes not," said Kelly Murphy, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo. "Their personalities are still developing, and I’m looking forward to see what they become."The cubs' mother, Satka, has ventured out with the newborns daily and is already showing her kids how to stalk and climb, the zoo says. The animals are being raised in the park's Africa Rocks leopard habitat.Amur leopards are the rarest of the big cat species on Earth. There are fewer than 100 Amur leopards believed to exist in the habitats of Russia and China. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego revealed Tuesday that its newest roller coaster will open this spring. "Emperor", named after the biggest species of penguin, which can be seen at the park's popular "Penguin Encounter" attraction."It will be the tallest, fastest, longest, and the only floorless dive coaster in the state of California and the entire west coast of North America," said Senior Vice President of Attractions Mike Denninger.RELATED: SeaWorld's new dive coaster will be named 'Emperor'The ride reaches 153 feet at its tallest point, tops 60 miles per hour, and includes multiple inversions. The centerpiece of the ride, however, is the 90-degree, straight down drop.
