SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes in San Diego County dropped 10.5 percent in July compared to June, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Month-over-month single-family home sales fell from 2,221 in June to 1,989 in July. Condominium and townhome sales fell from 1,162 to 994, a 14.5 percent drop, according to the association.Single-family home sales and sales of condominiums and townhomes saw smaller decreases when compared to July 2017. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego.The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. UC San Diego is significantly growing its enrollment to make the university one of the nation's premier residential campuses and it is critical that we address life safety issues as part of our growth."More than 36,000 students currently live on UCSD's campus, with the school planning to add another 20,000 student beds by 2022. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a fiery collision near Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.The crash, which involved a big rig and another vehicle, happened at about 12:30 p.m. in the 14900 block of San Dieguito Road in the North City area, according to San Diego police.The accident forced a closure of the roadway in the area to allow for investigation and cleanup, SDPD public affairs Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Recent rainfall has led to an influx of seabirds washing ashore and becoming beached along San Diego's coast, the San Diego Humane Society said Friday.The organization's Project Wildlife program, which focuses on animal rehabilitation and conservation, has recently cared for multiple seabirds, including loons, western grebes and a blue-footed booby who became beached during periods of high surf and stormy weather.Seabird diets are also affected by rainfall as vacillating ocean temperatures cause their food sources to dive deeper than normal. Consequently, the birds are often too weak to get past strong coastal waves into the open ocean. Humane Society animal care staff recently transferred their rescued birds to SeaWorld for further rehabilitative care.Residents are advised to contact a lifeguard, the Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement division at 619-299-7012, ext. 1, or SeaWorld at 800-541- 7325 if they see a beached or struggling seabird. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country.The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. For the biomedical science rankings, Nature Index reviewed55 journals chosen by an unaffiliated group of scientists with articles that span from 2012 to 2018.According to Nature Index Chief Editor Catherine Armitage, biomedical science can describe a variety of research topics such a genetics, microbiology and biochemistry."Biochemistry and cell biology, and genetics are the biggest fields by article count, but microbiology and biomedical engineering, reaping rewards from CRISPR and the microbiome, are the fastest rising among the top 10 fields of research,'' Armitage said.Harvard University topped both lists of healthcare institutions.Stanford University, UC San Francisco, Yale University and University of Pennsylvania rounded out the top five among university-affiliated biomedical science institutions.Worldwide, the National Institute of Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Stanford and Germany's Max Planck Society flanked Harvard."These new rankings reinforce other third-party endorsements of UC San Diego's faculty and the quality of its research,'' UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said.
