Larry Tesler, the Silicon Valley pioneer who created the now-ubiquitous computer concepts such as “cut,” “copy” and “paste,” has died. He was 74.He made using computers easier for generations as a proponent and pioneer of what he called “modeless editing.” That meant a user wouldn’t have to use a keyboard to switch between modes to write and edit, for example. “The inventor of cut/copy & paste, find & replace, and more was former Xerox researcher Larry Tesler. Your workday is easier thanks to his revolutionary ideas,” Xerox 550

Kia is joining its affiliate Hyundai in recalling thousands of vehicles in the U.S. because water can get into a brake computer, cause an electrical short and possibly a fire. The Kia recall covers nearly 229,000 Sedona minivans from the 2006 through 2010 model years. Also covered are Sorento SUVs from 2007 through 2009. Kia is telling owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the problem can be fixed. The company says in documents posted Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that moisture can get into the antilock brake control computer and cause an electrical short and possible fires. Kia has reports of seven fires, but no injuries. The problem can happen even if the engine is turned off.The recall is another in a series of problems that the South Korean automakers have had with engine fires during the past few years. Past problems have triggered investigations by the U.S. road safety agency.Dealers will install a relay in the main electrical junction box to stop power from going to the brake computer when the engine is off. The recall is expected to start April 10.Earlier this month, Hyundai recalled nearly 430,000 small cars due to the same problem. That recall covered certain 2006 through 2011 Elantra and 2007 through 2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. Both companies said the rate of fires is low, but Hyundai is not recommending that the cars be parked outside.Hyundai said in documents that it has three reports of fires and no related injuries. Last April, NHTSA opened two new investigations into fires involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles after getting complaints of more than 3,100 fires and 103 injuries. The agency granted a petition seeking the investigations by the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group. The investigations, one for Hyundai and the other for Kia, cover noncrash fires in almost 3 million vehicles from the affiliated automakers. The probes cover the 2011 through 2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe, the 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and the 2010 through 2015 Kia Soul. The complaints came from consumers and from data provided by both automakers.NHTSA had previously said it would incorporate the noncrash fires into a 2017 investigation that examined recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles for engine failures. It opened the new probes “based on the agency’s analysis of information received from multiple manufacturers, consumer complaints and other sources.”Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have affected more than 6 million vehicles since 2015, according to NHTSA documents. So far, Hyundai and Kia have recalled about 2.4 million vehicles to fix problems that can cause fires and engine failures. In addition, the automakers are doing a “product improvement campaign” covering another 3.7 million vehicles to install software that will alert drivers of possible engine failures and send the cars into a reduced-speed “limp” mode if problems are detected. 3041

It might not have been a 13-0 win, but the U.S. women's national team shutout Sweden by a 2-0 margin on Thursday, to finish group play 3-0 in the Women's World Cup. The Red, White and Blue advance to the Round of 16 thanks to the trio of wins. The next match comes Monday against Spain. The US last faced Spain in January, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Americans. The USA outscored its opponents by an 18-0 margin during the three-game group stage. The 18 goals the Americans scored were the most in group stage play in Women's World Cup history. Ranked ninth in the FIFA rankings, Sweden was by far the toughest foe the U.S. has faced so far. Just three minutes into Thursday's match, Lindsey Horan scored to put the U.S. up 1-0. A Sweden own goal in the 50th minute put the Americans up 2-0. 815

In like a lion, out like a lion?Don't let this weather April Fool you, after a warm weekend in many parts of the US, temperatures are dipping dramatically. From St. Louis to New York, millions of Americans enjoyed barbecues, beaches and parks with temperatures reaching into the 60s and 70s. Even parts of Alaska reached 70 degrees on Saturday -- the earliest in the year anywhere in the state has hit that high. But here's hoping the tulips and the sprinkler systems haven't yet made their way back into your yard as temperatures will be falling rapidly across large swaths of the country.By Monday morning temperatures are expected to drop so dramatically that over 20 million people from Arkansas to North Carolina will be under a freeze warning.Northeast likely to experience most dramatic changeCNN meteorologist Michael Guy expects a stunning reversal of temperatures for April 1 -- ranging from 10-20 degrees below average for this time of year.Guy says the most extreme drops are forecast to be in the Northeast, with New York City dropping from Sunday's 65 degree high to a forecast 46 degrees, Boston falling from 70 to 45 degrees and Washington DC from 64 to 45 degrees. The cold snap is due to a strong cold front moving in and the battle between warm versus cold air this time of year, he says. Most people in the Northeast, mid-South and Midwest will see highs in the 40s and the 50s.That means a city like Pittsburgh, after reveling in a high of 67 Saturday, will fall back to earth with temperatures in the upper 30s on Sunday. As the United States wakes up Monday, many of us will be trading out our flip flops for a closed toe and pulling our winter jackets back out of the storage closet. This is only temporary, however, as some part of the South are expected to bounce back to spring by Wednesday with Atlanta seeing temperatures of nearly 80 by next weekend. 1886
