CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A transient pleaded guilty to an arson count Monday for setting a fire in Chula Vista, one of several blazes he was arrested on suspicion of sparking.Alejandro Gonzalez, 33, is slated to be sentenced Jan. 13 to a 32-month prison term.He was initially charged with four felony counts of arson of a structure or forest involving blazes on May 24, June 14, Sept. 17 and Sept. 20, but those counts were dismissed Monday morning as part of his plea to a newly filed arson of property count.The new count is not connected with a specific fire, but Deputy District Attorney Roza Egiazarian said all the blazes he was charged with setting will be considered at his sentencing hearing.RELATED: Man tied to series of fires in Chula Vista river bottom arrestedAccording to Chula Vista police, who said about a dozen blazes were sparked at various locations throughout the city since late April, Gonzalez was arrested near the scene of a Sept. 20 brush fire.Officers spotted him "walking quickly away" from the blaze in the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue, according to police, who said he had several lighters in his possession and during questioning, "admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river-bottom area over the past five months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices."Chula Vista police said the fires were largely in the river bottom area that Gonzalez was "known to frequent" and mostly charred vegetation. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista school rallied around one of its own students faced with tragedy Thursday night.Camarena Elementary hosted a fundraiser for the family of Aura Mancilla, a mother who was murdered earlier this month.“She was here [at Camarena] almost every day trying to help out her daughter and our community,” said her friend and PTA President Karina Jones. Chula Vista Police said David Bell shot Aura Mancilla and her aunt, Patricia Garcia, in Mancilla’s home.  Thankfully, Mancilla’s daughter, Iyali, wasn’t home.  Bell later took his own life.The Camarena community organized a dinner fundraiser Thursday night where local vendors brought their food trucks and tents and donated 20% of the proceeds to the family. “It’s something that you want to take care of that child to make sure that she’s still loved and that we’re here for her,” said Jones.Chula Vista Police said they still don’t have a motive for the two killings. 989

(KGTV) - A San Diego woman is recounting the gruesome story of digging up her murdered sister's body in a Tijuana backyard.Erika Gonzalez last heard from her 32 year old sister, Fernanda Gonzalez on February 2. One unanswered text turned into dozens before Gonzalez reported her sister missing three days later. The same day she was reported missing, her husband was shot inside their Tijuana home. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center and treated for his gunshot wound. He was unable to answer any questions about the shooting and his missing wife, so Gonzalez took to Facebook and asked for help. Gonzalez tells 10News each post had thousands of shares before she got a phone call that changed the course of the search, "somebody call me and said to keep looking for my sister because she was already dead and in the back of her yard". Following that call were two others that said the same thing, "three different people telling the same story it has to be true" Gonzalez says she immediately called the Tijuana investigator on the case but she says they said they wouldn't be able to get to the house for a few days. "Sunday my dad calls me and tells me that he wants to look for my sister."Gonzalez tells 10News they went directly to her home in Tijuana and started their own search for answers. Gonzalez and her father dug up parts of the backyard while her mother and sister searched inside the home. After some time of digging, Gonzalez tells 10News she saw her sister's boot and knew they had found her, "we just start screaming and walking from here to there not knowing what to do."Tijuana police got to the house about 20 minutes after they called to say they found the body. Tuesday, investigators had a search warrant and taped off the entire street so they could search the home. Officials say they do not have any suspects in custody. 1878

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One driver was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Chula Vista overnight Saturday. According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the checkpoint was held on the 300 block of East H Street between 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday. More than 3,500 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint, 1,209 were screened, 13 drivers underwent sobriety tests and one was arrested.
