SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego public figure is speaking out after being hit three times by distracted drivers over 8 years.Monica Zech is the Public Information Officer for the City of El Cajon. Her passion is public safety, specifically behind the wheel. She started as a Traffic Reporter in 1984 and had a 30-year career in broadcasting. She immediately found out, through reporting on first responders, how many crashes were preventable. "When my father was hit about eight years after that, when I started lecturing, then the DUI issue became prevalent," Zech said her father was walking across the street in a marked cross-walk when a drunk driver hit him in 1992.August 29th, 2011 a distracted driver ran a red light slamming into her. The crash was so violent surgeons told her she should've been paralyzed, "it was shocking to hear that. They said is this your MRI? Are you sure? I said I'm sure that's my MRI. They said well we're surprised you're sitting here, you should be paralyzed. We have patients with the same MRI and they're in a wheelchair."She now has a titanium plate that straightens her spine and protects her in case she is in a future crash.The next crash was in traffic on I-5, February of 2017. "I kept noticed his head bobbing down, looking down, I realized he was on his cell phone and wham! He hits me from behind," she said.Tuesday she was hit from behind again. This time she says she stopped at a red light about to turn onto I-8 Eastbound from La Mesa Boulevard. She said the other driver's airbags deployed, she pulled over and was extremely apologetic, saying "I was looking at my cellphone, I do Door Dash, and I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." 10News has reached out to DoorDash for a comment and have not heard back.An excuse more common with a startling statistic from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 1860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Scripps Ranch man left for the storm ravaged Caribbean Island of St. Maarten Monday. RELATED: 70 percent of St. Maarten homes badly damaged, as Jose prepares to hitDrew Goodwin is volunteering his time and equipment to help recovery crews with his drones.Irma pounded the islands when it made landfall there last week.“I know (military personnel) are going to help restore order and make things safer so people can get in to start recovery,” Goodwin said.Goodwin is with Emergency Response Drones, a nonprofit that provides drone services to agencies.  He’s assisted with search and rescue efforts locally.He raised money so he can fly himself and his equipment to the island.“I have the support and resources, and if I didn’t do it, I would be ashamed of myself,” Goodwin said. 822

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A verdict has been reached in the trial of a former Yuma Police officer accused of raping his then-wife's cousin in 2017.Jurors found 34-year-old Jared Elkins guilty of four felony counts, including forcible rape and sexual penetration by force. Elkins was found not guilty, however, on four similar counts involving an intoxicated victim."I'm extremely pleased with this jury and their verdicts," said Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox."The fact that he was a law enforcement officer and carried a weapon was significant for the victim in this case she believed that he would carry through with these threats and why she was so afraid of him," argued Fox.Elkins was taken into custody without bail following the reading of the verdict. Elkins claimed during testimony this month that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Following the encounter, the woman says she ran to her mother's room and both escaped out of a window. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Oceanside family is mourning the loss of a beloved father to COVID-19.David Bustamante first started feeling sick during the first week of November."Started with a cold. Congestion, and then a cough in his chest," said his daughter Samantha Bustamante.A few days later, he drove himself to the hospital, received a COVID-19 test, and was sent home. By the time he learned he was positive, his symptoms had gotten worse."He was having trouble breathing, really raspy," Samantha said.Bustamante decided to stay at the home of a friend, who had also tested positive. On the morning of Nov. 13, Bustamante, a father of two grown children, passed away in his sleep, at the age of 64."It’s very hard knowing he’s gone, and it’s heartbreaking ... so quick, suddenly and out of the blue. Very unexpected," said Samantha.Samantha says her father loved his family and loved his work in the inspection process for a new home builder."He was resilient, hard-working, and caring with a big heart," said Samantha.During the pandemic, he kept working. She doesn't know how he contracted COVID-19, but does know he was diligent about wearing a mask."All I can say to people is to be as safe as you can in everything you do ... You just don't know what's going to happen," said Samantha.On Thanksgiving, Samantha will join some extended family is a small get-together, with one fewer place setting"He’s definitely going to be missed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An 18-month-old toddler ingested marijuana at a home in San Ysidro, San Diego Police said.Officers said a nurse at Sharp Chula Vista called them Sunday about 5:30 p.m. about the incident.The child ingested the pot at a home on Beyer Blvd and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, the nurse said.San Diego Police said child abuse investigators are looking into the matter. 399
