SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking for a summer job? The City of San Diego is hoping to fill 46 positions at city pools. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. RELATED: State offers money to help boost college savings accounts Tryouts are being held Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the Tierrasanta Pool from 5 – 7 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Vista Terrace Pool in San Ysidro from 9 – 10 a.m.Those who pass will need to attend a week-long lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lifeguards removed a body found floating in the ocean off Sunset Cliffs Friday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.First responders were notified about 9:30 a.m. about the remains near Point Loma Ave. Lifeguards removed the body and transported it to their headquarters, officials said.The person had been in the water “a while”, according to San Diego Police.Officers told 10News they would be handling the discovery as a death report and not sending a homicide team to investigate.The person's identity and cause of death were not immediately available. 590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Max may look like most 5-year-olds, but a rare illness left him paralyzed from the shoulder to his wrist. Bending his arm on his own is impossible — until he puts on a new device designed to help him move.University of California, San Diego, engineering students Ethan and Marcos Serrano developed these "Iron Kid" arms over the last ten weeks after max's doctor at Rady Children's Hospital enlisted their help. Today is the first time Max and his family will be able to take the arms home. Dad, Ted Ng, says he and his wife have been in awe of this whole process."It's been really touching to have this come together," Ng said. "There's all kinds of robotic arms out there but none of them would really work for his condition."Grateful to see their son gain back some of his mobility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Light scattered showers fell throughout the day from Mission Valley to Carmel Valley.While Sunday's rainfall marked the first fall rain for the region, Alex Tardy with the National Weather Service said that rain will disappear by Monday. “We're looking at conditions that are bone dry, record dry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa.The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong.His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. All his upper teeth were knocked out," she said.Sources say in all, eight guards were injured, including one with a fractured bone in his back.Armstrong says because of an ongoing investigation, she can't reveal details of the melee, but says the guards fought hard for their lives and the lives of their fellow guards."They are all heroes.
