Earlier in the night, Wheeler was jeered as he tried to rally demonstrators who have clashed nightly with federal agents sent in by President Donald Trump to quell ongoing unrest in the city. "I think it's important for me as the mayor and the police commissioner to be out here where people are demonstrating, hear their concerns, not only about the federal government, but also about our local (government)," Wheeler said.Though Wheeler stood in solidarity with protesters on Wednesday night, he's faced criticism from protesters from deploying similar tactics against demonstrators prior to the arrival of federal agents.Wheeler was among 13 mayors of major U.S. cities to sign an open letter to the Trump administration Wednesday, asking that federal agents not be sent to deter crime. A business owner says his Poway office has been repeatedly burglarized by a thief who steals plants, among other things.The man snatched succulents and pilfered a large plumeria in his latest visit to the Poway business on Adrian Street near Midland Road on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., according to owner Tom Belway.The grab-and-go gardener also disabled a surveillance camera and removed sensor lights, he said."This is the sixth or seventh time they have swept the property for any 'loose' items," Belway wrote on social media. "Previously they stole propane tanks, rocking chairs, construction materials and plants. One visit they had all of our outdoor furniture staged at the fence but they must have been interrupted."Down the street at the Park Church on Midland Road, pastor Andrew Henneforth said his church has been hit twice over the past two weeks.He said in the first incident, someone broke into a camper trailer and stole landscaping equipment and propane tanks.The second time, the thief hopped a fence and took a bicycle. There was a skateboard and drugs left behind, the pastor said."In this situation, am I a victim? Sure," Henneforth said. "But in some ways he's kind of a victim as well -- to addiction, to substance abuse."The church added security cameras after the second incident, he said.It's not clear if the two cases are related. President Donald Trump has pardoned prisoner activist Jon Ponder, who spent time in prison for bank robbery. Ponder’s pardon aired during the Republican National Convention Tuesday evening.Ponder has become an activist for prisoners and helping those behind bars return to normal life upon release. Ponder has helmed the Las Vegas-based organization HOPE for Prisoners for the last 15 years.Richard Beasley, a retired FBI agent who arrested Ponder, stood alongside Trump and Ponder during the pardon.Trump has previously been involved with HOPE for Prisoners. In February, Trump visited Las Vegas and met with 30 members of the program.Ponder said in February that his organization has helped 3,000 formerly incarcerated people back into the workforce.Trump has used pardons and clemencies sparingly during his tenure.
