SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An East Village couple was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly subjecting a 3-year old child to torture and sexual abuse over a several-month period while caring for the toddler at their home, San Diego police reported.Officers arrested Marcos Javier Ramirez, 27, and 25-year-old Vennesia Ruiz in the Midway area on Tuesday evening, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said.Ramirez and Ruiz had been entrusted by an acquaintance to care for the child when the abuse allegedly began last October, Takeuchi said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Masked intruders threatened a couple with guns and slashed the male victim with a knife today during a daybreak residential robbery in a Corridor-area neighborhood.The 27-year-old man and 20-year-old woman awoke at their residence in the 3200 block of Bramson Place about 6:30 a.m. to find the thieves next to their bed, pointing guns at them and demanding valuables, according to San Diego police. One of the intruders held a knife to the man's throat, Officer Robert Heims said.During the robbery, the male victim suffered several cuts, Heims said.Details on the severity of the wounds were not released.The thieves stole an unknown amount and type of items from the couple before fleeing, according to police. 738

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing Downtown will accommodate nearly 300 additional homeless residents on Christmas Eve due to forecasted overnight rain, the San Diego Housing Commission announced Monday. The commission activates the Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees, the chance of rain is higher than 40 percent or in the case of sustained high winds. The program is a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. The commission also funds the program. Father Joe's can shelter an additional 250 residents throughout the night while Connections Housing can add up to 30 residents. Check-in at Father Joe's begins at 4 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 5 a.m. the next morning. Check-in at Connections Housing runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 7 a.m. the next morning. Those at both shelters will have meals provided to them.
