SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon.In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An infectious disease expert at San Diego State University says early research suggests the COVID-19 pandemic could cause a spike in another, more deadly respiratory disease: tuberculosis.An estimated one in four people on the planet is already infected with TB without knowing it. The bacterium that causes the disease can lie dormant for years, even decades, waiting for the right moment to strike.San Diego State University professor Dr. Faramarz Valafar says SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could be just the right pathogen to trigger more TB cases to activate, both worldwide and in the U.S. And the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread the TB bacteria more efficiently.“COVID-19 could act as a vehicle for transmission of tuberculosis,” he said. “This is a significant public health risk.”In the early 1900s, TB was the number one cause of death in the U.S. Today, it remains one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide with about 1.5 million deaths each year, although deaths in the U.S. are now rare. There were 515 deaths in the U.S. in 2017, the most recent data available.Although the tuberculosis is mostly curable and preventable with antibiotics, some strains have become drug-resistant.“I believe it's naive to think that because there is not much tuberculosis here in the United States, it’s going to remain that way,” said Valafar. “We now have a vehicle for the transmission of all sorts of tuberculosis strains from around the world to the United States.”The CDC estimates up to 13 million people in the U.S. have latent TB. Studies have shown the disease can activate when the immune system is weakened, including by HIV.“If COVID-19 comes in and keeps the immune system busy or overburdened, then my first worry is that tuberculosis in those people could activate,” he said.A small study out of China that has not yet been peer-reviewed suggests people with latent TB are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID symptoms. Other experts have raised concerns about the pandemic could exacerbate TB infections.Valafar said his second worry is that the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread tuberculosis. Both pathogens take hold in the lungs and cause coughing.“If the person has tuberculosis, all it takes is for COVID-19 to make that person cough or sneeze and there will be a much higher risk of tuberculosis transmission,” he said.Valafar and his team are already studying the effects of TB and HIV in South Africa. They plan to soon expand their study to examine the effects of COVID-19 as well, with results expected in about a year.In the meantime, he’s sounding the alarm to urge people to heed public health warnings. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award.
