BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday met respectively with Chilean Senate President Jovino Novoa and Russia's Presidential Representative to the Far Eastern Federal District Viktor Ishayev.In a meeting with Novoa, Wu reviewed the four-decade bilateral ties since China and Chile established diplomatic ties in December 1970.As the first South American nation to forge diplomatic relations with China, Chile was also the first Latin American country to recognize China's market status and sign free trade agreement."China would like to work with Chile to maintain high-level contacts, expand trade cooperation and enrich people exchanges so as to advance our all-round partnership," Wu said. Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), meets with visiting president of the Senate of Chile Jovino Novoa Vazquez in Beijing, capital of China, Feb. 5, 2010.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress(NPC), China's top legislature, pinned high hopes on bilateral legislative ties, calling for enhanced exchanges and cooperation by making use of the effective political dialogue mechanism.Novoa, who was leading a parliamentary delegation for a week-long visit in China, said Chile would never change its course of developing good relations with China no matter what happened in Chile's political landscape.Novoa said the National Congress of Chile would like to work with NPC to boost bilateral relations. Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), meets with visiting Russia's presidential representative to the Far Eastern Federal District Victor Ivanovich Ishaev in Beijing, capital of China, Feb. 5, 2010.In another meeting with Ishayev, Wu underlined the importance of China-Russia relation and called for deeper political trust and stronger strategic coordination.Wu said cooperation between different areas of the two countries accounted for an important position in China-Russia relationship and enjoyed a solid foundation for cooperation.Wu called on both countries to take effective measures to implement the cooperation programs the two sides had agreed and promote cross-border infrastructure and transportation cooperation.Ishayev, who became Russia's Presidential Representative to the Far Eastern Federal District last year, said the Russian government paid much attention to the Far East area, which offered new opportunities for collaboration with China.He proposed enhancing cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, energy exploration and forestry processing, among others, to push for comprehensive exchanges and cooperation between neighboring regions of the two countries and realization of win-win situation.Ishayev, who arrived in Beijing Friday, will meet with heads of departments of energy, transportation and commerce during his stay till next Wednesday.

CHONGQING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chongqing Higher People's court on Monday upheld the convictions of 54 members of two mafia-like gangs, amid a massive crackdown on organized crime in the southwestern Chinese city.In the second trial at the court, Wang Tianlun, leader of a 23-member gang, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for organizing and instigating gang-related crimes, forcing others to trade and assault.Wang had controlled a local market since 1995, using violence and other criminal means to force vendors to sell meat injected with water, the court said.Tang Youbin, a gang member, was also sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on similar charges. Another 21 members received life imprisonment and jail terms ranging from one to 20 years.In a separate case, Li Qiang, a former municipal lawmaker, was sentenced to 20 years in jail for seven crimes including organizing a 31-member criminal gang, disturbing public order, disturbing traffic order, illegal business, bribery and hiding accounting documents.Li Qiang based his gang around the company he founded in 1996, Chongqing Yuqiang Group Co. Ltd. To boost his company's share of the Chongqing transportation market, Li organized gang members to disturb the traffic order and cause traffic jams. More than 55 buses were illegally put into use in the city, with the illegal business generating an estimated 18.4 million yuan (2.7 million U.S. dollars).Of the other 30 members of the gang, 25 received sentences ranging from one to 18 years.The members of the two gangs were put on trial in December last year at the Chongqing No. 5 Intermediate People's Court.

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Principled consensus was reached between China, European Union Naval Force, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), China's Ministry of National Defense said on Friday.The consensus, outlining the shipping escort cooperation based on "areas of responsibility" in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC), was approved Thursday at the the plenary meeting of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia in New York, said a statement from the ministry.Previously, China had suggested cooperation be based on "areas of responsibility" under the UN Security Council resolutions while EU, NATO and CMF proposed coordination guidelines of the IRTC.China and the three parties conducted rounds of consultations at the contact group meeting, international coordination meeting in Beijing and the Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE) system meeting in Bahrain.The final principled consensus absorbed components of "areas of responsibility" in escort missions cooperation and the coordination guidelines of IRTC, showcasing concerted effort by all parties.China always takes a positive and open attitude towards international cooperation on shipping escorts, and would like to cooperate with countries and organizations in line with UN Security Council resolutions for peace and stability in the Gulf of Aden and Somalia waters, said the statement.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Being the only foreign rescue team to run medical-aid stations in quake-ravaged Haiti, Chinese rescuers are giving quake victims what they desperately need: medical assistance, team members told Xinhua via phone Saturday.     The China International Search and Rescue Team, arriving in Port-au-Prince at 2 a.m. local time on Jan. 14, opened the first medical assistance station at 8 p.m. the next day, said captain Hou Shike.     The station had been treating patients pulled out of debris and provided medical support to medical and security personnel, he said.     China's second station in the refugee camp near the office building of Haitian prime minister had treated and some 120 people, while giving hygiene tips and conducting epidemic prevention work in the camp.     "To prevent epidemics, we had sterilized an area of 300 square meters in the refugee camp crammed with thousands of quake victims," Hou said.     "Confronted with severe wound infection, numerous refugees are in urgent need of professional medical treatment," said Fan Haojun, deputy captain of the team.     He said although local volunteers had done their best to offer basic treatment, but because of the lack of wound cleansing, infections among some of the wounded had deteriorated that even small operations costed more time and medicines than usual, said Fan.     The Chinese rescue team of more than 60 people left Beijing for the Caribbean island Wednesday night along with 10 tonnes of food, equipment and medicines.     The massive quake also left eight Chinese police officers, serving in China's peacekeeping forces, buried. The body of one missing police officer had been found, said China's public security ministry late Saturday night.
