There's a lot of negativity on social media. Black trauma and negative views around the Black experience are showing up there, especially now.A new initiative called "Black Joy Matters" is trying to change this.“There's a huge importance in showing that Black existence is not all death, it is not all trauma, it is not all racial injustice,” said Shavone Charles. “It's a call for us to acknowledge our joy and acknowledge our healing and happiness during a time when we need it most.”Charles is leading the "Black Joy Matters" initiative for photo-sharing platform VSCO. About 76% of people in a new survey they did with Gen Z say they regularly or often see depictions of racial violence on their social media feed and it hurts them emotionally. Their feelings include hopelessness and anger.“We deserve to live our lives in spectrum, and you know showcase what those experiences look like inclusive of the trauma but not exclusive to trauma,” said Charles.A psychologist we spoke with agrees that it's important not to define the Black experience just by racial oppression. He says it's easy to do because there is so much of it. And Black joy can get overlooked.“Yes, we are sort of in the midst of all of these sorts of negative incidents, but even in the midst of those incidents, we not only sort of persist and survive, but we can and often times do continue to thrive,” said Kevin Cokley with UT Austin’s Department of of Educational Psychology.Cokley says the Black joy initiative is important for acknowledging the assets and strengths of the Black community, which is an approach that has been used in Black psychology for many years. But it can be helpful for others too.“I think it's helpful for non-Black people to recognize that you know the ways in which you might sort of caricature or stereotype Black people is very limited and does not give you the true perspective of their humanity,” said Cokley.He points at one positive we've seen from everything going on in our country now. It is bringing people together to be more civilly minded and socially justice oriented.The survey from VSCO also found 84% of Black Gen Z feel they have allies of other races on social media now. 2205

This week, Jada Pinkett Smith is engaging in a new conversation that's been difficult for women to talk about: hair loss. But it impacts millions of women, and instead of dealing with it alone, she wants to empower women to talk about it openly.One woman knows exactly what she's talking about. "And my husband will say, 'That that one doesn't match that outfit.'"It's easier to laugh about it now, but when it first happened that was the last thing she wanted to do."It was traumatic," Payne said. "To deal with it. To deal with your own feelings because I love my hair."Payne's hair had always been long, but in 2011 it started falling out, and about two years later it was all gone."I was devastated," Payne said. "Yeah, I I didn't know what to think."As hard as it was to process what was going on outside, she said what was happening inside was even harder."Now what I can do? And is is ever going to come back? And how are people going to see me? I don't want people to see me," Payne said.It's a struggle many people often go through alone. That's why Payne said seeing someone like Jada Pinkett Smith sharing her struggles publicly is so powerful."I was in the shower one day and then just like handfuls of hair just in my hands," Pinkett said on her show Red Table Talk. "And I was just like, 'Oh my God am I going bald?'""People are going to see what she has," Payne said. "This, and is willing to come out and to tell others about it. And so I can be ok with this. It's not just me."As many as 6.8 million people in the United States are affected by Alopecia, a common autoimmune skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes other areas of the body. There are several types, including scarring alopecias, which are irreversible, and non-scarring alopecias, which are more common."Many of the non-scarring alopecia are reversible depending on the reason that they exist," said Dr. Michelle Draznin, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente.Draznin said non-scarring alopecia can caused by different issues like your autoimmune system, thyroid and even stress."It's really hard on people particularly women because I think it's not super socially acceptable to have hair loss in women," Draznin said. "And it can feel very very vulnerable. The good news is, that usually goes away."Even if her hair doesn't come back, Payne said she can and will live a productive life. Through music, New York City's "Hip Hop Public Health" is creatively reaching underserved communities. Using a variety of campaigns and health-related topics, they're not only getting local and national interest, they're getting noticed around the world. Their most recent release has to do with salt and uses a popular song from the 90s.You might recognize the song and tune, but this time, instead of "Let's Talk about Sex," "Let's Talk about Salt" stars the Grammy winning Cheryl "Salt" James from the musical group Salt-N-Pepa. The song is focused on preventing hypertension, which has a lot do with salt.“The reality is most people consume way too much salt. It’s ubiquitous in the American diet,” said the "Hip Hop Doc," who is also known as Dr. Olajide Williams. “I still haven’t fully embraced it but it's a fun name and whatever I can do to further the cause to inspire young children to be healthy, I’d embrace any moniker for that."Dr. Williams is a neurologist, public health expert, a professor at Columbia University, and chief of staff of neurology at Columbia University. As if that wasn't enough on his place, he's also the founder of Hip Hop Public Health.“I started it because of the tremendous disparities and inequities that flood communities of color.”Dr. Williams says that to affect systemic change, we need a multi-layered approach, which has a lot to do with communication.“Information – adequate, effective information doesn’t penetrate a lot of our marginalized communities of color sufficiently enough, effectively enough to enable, ignite and inspire behavior change,” said Dr. Williams, who also says there are often problems with the credibility of the messenger.Dr. Williams developed a model in which hip-hop icons deliver messages. People are drawn to the music which then connects them to the information. Hypertension prevention is just one of their missions. They've promoted inclusion and fought childhood obesity with Special Olympics.This past spring, they released "20 Seconds Or More" to empower youth with accurate information about COVID-19. CEO and Executive Director of Hip Hop Public Health, Lori Rose Benson, says “we’re hearing from schools all around the country, in fact all around the world, about how habits are changing.”Benson says their handwashing song was used at an international school in India.“We have a very strong infrastructure in terms of connecting with school communities. We work very closely with school districts all around the country, from New York City to Seattle to West Palm Beach, Florida, and Boston.”All of the resources are free, and their reach is crafted towards the platforms in which youth would engage. That includes things like social media websites and YouTube.According to a 2017 statistic from the American Heart Association, African Americans were 20% more likely to die from heart disease and African American women are 60% more likely to have high blood pressure. And affecting change, Dr. Williams says, starts with our youth.“We know that knowledge is power and when you’re empowered by knowledge, you can change your behaviors and operate a certain way and sometimes these behavior changes are the difference between life and death.”These efforts are culturally tailored to make a difference, which will hopefully have a huge impact on all of our futures. 3359

This week, former First Lady Michelle Obama said she’s suffering from a “low-grade depression” because of stress from the pandemic, race relations and social justice in the US and the political strife surrounding it all, she says."I'm waking up in the middle of the night because I'm worrying about something or there's a heaviness," Obama said in her "The Michelle Obama Podcast" on Wednesday. "I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low."Obama’s podcast launched at the end of July, her episode on Wednesday was about “Protests and the Pandemic.” She told her guest she has not always felt like getting on the treadmill or waking up at a regular time each morning.“You know, it's a direct result of just being out of, out of body, out of mind. And spiritually, these are not, they are not fulfilling times, spiritually. You know, so I, I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting,” Obama said on her podcast.She then talked about how her family has tried to keep a schedule, to stop what they are doing at 5 p.m. each day and come together to “do an activity” before getting dinner and ready and sitting down as a family.Covid-19 fatigue and a feeling of being overwhelmed is really common right now. Some of those may have included adding safety features to our home, which can help save money on home insurance.A lot of Americans are also driving a lot less now, which can help with car insurance.“If you're working from home, like a lot of us, you're probably driving significantly less than you used to and that's something you can bring up to your insurance carrier because that can significantly reduce the amount you pay for your premium,” said Kates.Insurance policies haven't necessarily changed, but the way insurance companies look at lifestyle changes may have changed, so it's worth checking in on your policies.
