SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Feeling overwhelmed by bills? 10News is exploring solutions for making it in San Diego and found there may be a way around the mountain of debt.A recent study by Lendedu suggests companies are open to allowing consumers to negotiate their bills. Using data provided by the company Truebill, Lendedu analyzed which companies tend to be more generous in negotiating with customers.Satellite service providers were analyzed in the report. Customers of SiriusXM had the highest success rate in negotiations, according to Lendedu. Consumers had negotiation success rates in the 80s with three other companies, Suddenlink, Centurylink, and Dish Network, the report showed.The study went on to note, “When it came to how much companies actually knocked off the average customer’s bill, SiriusXM once again led the way; the average SiriusXM customer was able to decrease that monthly charge by 40 percent or more. Immediately behind SiriusXM was CenturyLink, ADT Security, and DirectTV, who all fell into the 25 to 29 percent range in terms of the percentage the bill was decreased by post-negotiations.”RELATED: Making it in San Diego: How to deal with large medical bills"They're looking at who you are as a consumer," said Steven Osinski, a sales and direct marketing professor at San Diego State University. Osinski says the way businesses make their money, especially when it comes to services, is through recurring revenue. Once you're signed up, many will cut deals to keep you."There’s an industry term that we call churn, and basically what happens is it costs about five to ten times on average more money to obtain a new customer then it does to keep one," said Osinski.If you're thinking about trying to negotiate, Osinksi says companies are looking at certain factors before they agree to different terms.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt hole"They’re looking at who you are as a consumer,” he said. “Are you paying your bills on time, are you prompt, do you have extended coverage, have you been with them for a long time."Osinski says don't be afraid to ask companies for a lower price. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each day that the courts in San Diego are closed, an already daunting case load grows.The closure leaves San Diegans wondering if, and when, they’ll get justice.According to the San Diego Superior Court, “On Tuesday, May 26, the Court will resume many services, though most will be provided remotely. With the community spread of COVID-19 still a concern, in-person services at the courthouses will continue to be limited to urgent needs.” The court said it’s in the process of sending out rescheduling notices to the parties involved in more than 87,000 hearings.To help cut down the backlog in the civil arena, a group of attorneys is working together to ensure San Diegans have an opportunity to have their case either mediated or have their dispute handled. It’s called RESOLVE Law San Diego.“Without some mechanism to try and deal with these cases, like a settlement conference or mediation, there's really no way for a person who's involved in a lawsuit to have their things resolved,” said attorney Benjamin Bunn.“We have in San Diego over a dozen calendar departments, each of those departments has over 1,000 cases assigned to it, and every Friday each of those independent calendar departments have law and motion hearings that involved at least a dozen and usually two dozen or more cases,” explained attorney William Low. “All of those hearings have been put on hold for the last eight weeks. Nothing has been happening to resolve those cases. RESOLVE Law San Diego is specifically targeted to help those litigants resolve those matters sooner rather than later.”RESOLVE Law San Diego will give people involved in civil cases the opportunity to connect with a retired judge or a qualified local attorney who will agree to hear matters free of charge.“If you go to court right now you might not get a hearing date until November, but if you want to use RESOLVE Law, you’re going to have a hearing within the next two weeks,” said attorney Amy Martell.According to the group, it’s not a court-sponsored program; it is both voluntary and by stipulation of the parties only. The program will only last for a set amount of time and is designed to streamline the law and motion and mediation process so that cases can move forward while the court reopens and manages its caseload.So far more than 175 people have signed up to volunteer their time."By the program that we have set up, we have very good lawyers and retired judges volunteering their free time over the next 120 days to help resolve issues and to help get the court system moving again,” said attorney David Casey.The attorneys involved said hearings will be handled over the phone or through teleconferencing, a safe and easy way to communicate during COVID-19.The program aims to give people a little certainty in times that are anything but that."It will help them get justice quicker, sooner, with less frustrations,” said attorney Heather Rosing.According to the RESOLVE Law website, this type of venture is the first of its kind in the state designed to provide civil litigants an alternative and free venue for dispute resolution during this crisis.In a statement to 10News, San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne wrote, “This effort is a great example of San Diego’s lawyers and retired judges coming together to help the community obtain resolutions of their disputes and to help reduce the backlog of cases due to the pandemic.” 3450

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends are grieving the loss of a young man killed in a South Bay crash that also sent five teenagers to the hospital. "This is like a bad dream and I want to wake up," said Ivan Nares.Nares says he got a heart-stopping call from his brother Gustavo, 18, from the emergency room Wednesday morning."He said, 'Ivan, Ivan, I need you. Please come,'" said Nares.RELATED: Driver killed in Otay Mesa SR-905 crash, several others injuredNares rushed to San Diego from his Tijuana home. His brother was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 packed with teens after a night at an indoor trampoline park.The CHP says around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the car was headed south on State Route 905 going at a high rate of speed when it hit the center divide near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp. The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.Three males and two females, ranging from 15- to 19-years-old, were rushed to hospitals. Among them was Nares' brother, who suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs. He is uninsured. Gustavo is an amateur boxer and a recent graduate of San Ysidro High. He was in the process of applying to college. Instead, he faces a tough road to recovery."The advice give to all the people, especially young people is don't drive like you are in a 'Fast and Furious' movie. Be cautious. You're not just playing with your life. You're messing with other people's lives," Nares said.Nares has yet to tell his brother that his friend died in the crash. He's waiting for the right time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For several months, San Diegans were invited to weigh in on the Port Master Plan proposal. It's the Port of San Diego's first comprehensive update in nearly 40 years, aiming to reflect changes in the needs and priorities of the region. The Port manages 34 miles of San Diego Bay and Waterfront along Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, and San Diego. When the Port published the proposed master plan in April, several communities voiced major concerns; two of the most vocal being Coronado and Point Loma residents. "We have this little slice of history, and I think it's our obligation to preserve, so it's enjoyed generations to come," said Cameron Lilley, a multi-generational Point Loma native.For months, Lilley has been garnering community support in opposition to some of the proposals impacting Shelter Island. "We started digging into it and quickly realized that there were so many points that really didn't consider the locals in the restructure of our community," said Lilley. Some of their primary concerns:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docksThe Port received nearly 3,000 comment letters in response to its initial proposal. On Monday Port commissioners listened to public comment and made recommendations to staff.Direction to staff for the Shelter Island Planning District:No new hotel rooms on Shelter Island, move them to Harbor Island 30-foot height limit, consistent with City of San Diego height limitKeep Marlin Club at current location La Playa Piers - keep piers the way they are; open to the public with gangways and floating docks to remain privateLa Playa Yacht Club - no perimeter walkway, pursue other methods to provide public access to the areaScott Street - no reconfigurationAdd clarifying language:While it was never the Port’s intent to build a restroom on the La Playa Trail or at the trailhead, add language to clarify that no restrooms will be built Clarify the Port’s intent for the La Playa Trail to maintain it in its natural stateClarify the Port’s intent to maintain and protect current maritime usesPort staff will bring a revised proposal back to the table in six months, giving the public another opportunity to weigh in. 2289
