OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — The Oceanside Main Street program launched a campaign to support local businesses in May and now that restrictions have been extended, so has the fundraiser.Manager Gumaro Escarcega said the goal is for the community to help the community, so they partnered with Whitlock Ink to create t-shirts and masks to sell that say “Oceanside Strong.” Initially, ,000 was raised and a majority of that was distributed to 13 Oceanside small businesses. Escarcega said with restrictions continuing, they made the decision to keep fundraising, so the products are still available.“As the pandemic continues to impact our communities, we felt that we need to send positive messages out there,” said Escarcega.Stacey Holmes owns Otterlei Coastal and said she’s felt the hit of the pandemic, so she was relieved to receive the help from the campaign.“We were able to use the grant for a little buffer, not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring,” she said. She also said that not only is the money-making a difference, but the community is coming together like never before to help each other. She said store owners are encouraging customers to stop by each other’s shops and restaurants, which has also helped.“I’m trying to pay it back forward to, make sure you go visit such and such store, go visit this restaurant or what have you, so even as a business we’re all supporting each other as well,” she said.Escarcega said right now, Main Street is working on another grant program that should be launched in August. He said the goal is to create a shop local campaign.“Just keep moving forward and keep thinking positive and we’ll all get through this,” said Escarcega. 1694

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A worker doing an inspection on a popular central Florida thrill ride was killed Monday after falling more than 50 feet.Orange County Fire Rescue tweeted that firefighters responded to the Orlando StarFlyer ride early Monday after receiving a report that the 21-year-old man had fallen. The unidentified worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The ride wasn’t moving at the time.At 450 feet, the Orlando StarFlyer is billed as the world’s tallest swing ride. Visitors in swings rotate around a pole reaching speeds up to 45 mph. The ride is located on International Drive, the busy tourist corridor in Orlando. 659

On Johns Hopkins University's graph of countries' daily confirmed COVID-19 cases, the U.S. is currently at the top.“The United States does have a tremendous outbreak that is the world’s worse currently,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and a practicing Infectious Disease Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Physician.Dr. Adalja says parts of the northeast have the virus largely under control, but other states--primarily in the south and southwest--have an increase in the number of new cases, an increase in the percent of positive tests, and reports of hospitals being under pressure for capacity. He says the surge is related to multiple factors, but the primary one is social interaction.“Many states lifted their stay-at-home orders, and when they did that, a lot of individuals thought this was a green light that things were safe, that this virus was contained, that the pandemic was largely over. And that wasn’t the case," Dr. Adalja said. "The virus established itself in the human population and is not going to go anywhere until there is a vaccine.”Dr. Adalja says any amount of social interaction will be taken advantage of by a virus like this, especially if people aren’t wearing masks. Studies show a growing number of people can get infected and spread the virus without showing any symptoms. But he says the key to preventing more outbreaks is contact tracing.“There’s no way that we can move forward unless we determine where these undetected chains of transmission are and halt that, and you can only do that with robust contact tracing,” Dr. Adalja said.Other countries in Asia and Europe have had effective efforts in contact tracing. So the question is, why does the U.S. fall short? Experts say there are several reasons. Dr. Sandy Johnson directs the Global Health Affairs program at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He says the U.S. has a fairly complex political system.“We have national government. We have state government. We have local government. So, there are different rules and regulations that come into play and that can make it difficult to coordinate a consistent response,” Dr. Johnson said.Even if one area has done a good job at controlling the spread of the virus, Dr. Johnson explains a neighboring area may not have followed the same guidelines. As people start to travel, so does the virus, and those eager to believe the virus doesn’t pose a major threat only add to the fire. We’ve seen that in another country that isn’t too far behind the U.S. in its increase in cases.“The biggest similarity with Brazil is that there was an evasion from the federal government in Brazil about the danger of this virus which is put a complacency into the public. The same thing happened to us in January, February and March and is still really occurring in many parts of the United States,” Dr. Adalja said.Dr. Adalja and Dr. Johnson agree there has been a lack of clear and consistent communication in the U.S. Opposite of that, Dr. Johnson says Germany has been successful in keeping its numbers down, due in part to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s communication approach.“She was speaking to the public. She was talking to her health and science advisors and she was sharing the science with the public. And from day one, she was very clear that there were hard times ahead,” Dr. Johnson said. However, it’s not just up to national leaders and policymakers. Dr. Johnson says the population of a country must also have the willingness to look at and rely on science.“While I would say by and large people are doing incredibly well in this country and taking collective action to take care of each other and are eager for scientific information, we’ve also seen these little clusters that are simply plugging their ears and going ‘la la la la la la’,” Dr. Johnson said. Both doctors say what we can do as citizens does make a difference. It’s important to realize many people are making smart decisions for the greater good instead of only thinking about themselves.“Think about what happened in early March and how many people almost overnight went into lockdown, and were taking action to take care of each other,” Dr. Johnson said. 4269

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida: home to green palms, sunny skies and long lines for early voting.“We're seeing a lot of people who were actively engaged,” said Dr. Larry Walker, a professor with the Department of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at the University of Central Florida, who specializes in race and voting rights.Dr. Walker said, looking at state data, he expects a higher Black voter turnout this year in Florida, a state where they account for 14% of eligible voters.“I think we're going to see increasingly more Black voters that didn't vote in 2016, weren't ready to vote, to vote in this election,” Dr. Walker said. But will they in other battleground states? Some Black voters wonder.“I think our culture doesn't vote enough,” said Wisconsin voter Raven Ewing.“To be honest, I don’t know,” said Florida voter Joanna Joseph. “I really don’t know.”American University decided to find out. Researchers there surveyed 1,200 Black voters in the battleground states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. What researchers found were differences that are generational. When it comes to how motivated they are to vote, older Black voters overwhelmingly say they will definitely vote, while only 29% of Black voters under the age of 30 said they would.Definitely Voting60+ years old - 78%30-59 years old - 62%18-29 years old - 29%Source: American University Black Swing Voters ProjectAmerican University’s Sam Fulwood III is a fellow at American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies and one of the researchers involved in the Black Swing Voter Project.“The starkest difference of all of those different categories came along generational lines,” Fulwood said. How do Black voters in swing states feel about the candidates? That also differs by age, with support for former vice president Joe Biden higher among older Black voters than younger.Conversely, President Donald Trump’s support is higher among younger Black voters than older, though still in the single digits.Plan to Vote for Biden60+ years old – 86%30-59 years old – 70%18-29 years old – 47%Plan to Vote for Trump60+ years old – 4%30-59 years old – 7%18-29 years old – 8%Source: American University Black Swing Voters Project“Politicians, whether they're Democrats or Republicans, if they want to engage African-Americans, they're going to have to show some tangible benefits of political engagement that make them feel that there is a reason to participate in the system,” Fulwood said.Researchers say it is possible Sen. Kamala Harris’ historic run on the Democratic ticket, as a vice presidential candidate of Black and South Asian descent – along with her being an alumna of Howard University, one of the premier Historically Black College and Universities – could help bring some Black voters to the polls. Just how many are motivated to do so, remains to be seen. 2913
