SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Funerals will be held next Thursday for two teenagers killed when they mistakenly jumped off a freeway bridge on SR-56 after a crash. 18-year-old Ruben Ortiz Jr. and 17-year-old Jesse Garcia of Escondido were in a 2012 Nissan Altima that went out of control and crashed in Carmel Valley Tuesday night. The teens and four other people got out of the car and ran across eastbound lanes of the freeway. Ortiz and Garcia jumped over the railing, not realizing it was an 80-foot drop into Gonzales Creek. Two girls who had been in the vehicle, 14 and 15 years old, suffered severe injuries and remain in the hospital. “It sat at me and hit me and our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father of three boys, Ben Walrath, was excited when he heard baseball practice was starting up again."There's only so much Fortnite they can play," Walrath said, his son Austin, 10, chiming in, "before I get bored." "Before we have to do something different," Walrath continued.He had a talk with his boys about how practice is going to be different to protect them from coronavirus.When quizzed, his sons answered correctly, "no dugout during practice," Austin said. "Stay six feet away." Walrath reminded them, "we're not going to be doing high fives and stuff like that... and no games right away."While Austin wasn't enthused about the new protocol, he was excited to see his friends for the first time in months at practice Monday.President of Sweetwater Valley Little League Arturo Maldonado said they are rolling out practice in three phases. Monday was the beginning of phase one with kids ages 10-15. This weekend phase two will start for kids ages 7-10 and as soon as June 26 the youngest ball players ages 4-7 will get to come back to practice."Everybody's learning how things are going to be done out in the field and that's why we're doing it in three different phases so that we can make adjustments," Maldonado said.He said managers and coaches will be wearing masks, but the kids don't have to. He said the kids will be encouraged to socially distance.There won't be any hugging, high-fives, or sunflower seeds and hand sanitizer is always close by. The dugout will be expanded to the stands, Maldonado said, to accommodate for social distancing.Parents aren't allowed at practice yet and sick players are encouraged to stay home.Monday Walrath said the boys played wiffleball, just as they would any other day."We're not going to change the game of baseball. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- First responders late Sunday morning rescued a man from sunset cliffs they say was intoxicated and naked. San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to No Surf Beach near Hill Street just before 11 to perform the rescue. According to the department, the man was exploring down by the water when waves picked up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Documents show the man accused of pummeling a teenage Syrian refugee on a trolley car has a history of run-ins with authorities.On Oct. 15, Adrian Vergara was accused of the crime after approaching the teen and asking him if he's Mexican."He responded, no I am Arab. He does not speak a lot of English, and with that response the person began to pummel him in the face," Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Legal Director, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, said.Tuesday, San Diego Police said they had arrested Vergara on suspicion of assault with force and violation of civil rights.RELATED: Man accused of attacking Syrian refugee aboard trolley car arrested10News dug into Vergara's background and found a history of violent incidents. In 2012, court documents say Vergara threatened a man with a billy club. He did community service in the South Metro Career Center. A letter says he worked well there with special needs students as well as general students. A certificate also showed he completed a 12-hour anger management program in 2013 and was called an outstanding professional candidate.RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeIn 2015, a case was dismissed accusing Vergara of attacking another man. And in 2016, he was charged with grand theft and burglary for breaking into the Central Library.Later that year, documents say Vergara violated a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, kicking her front door, texting her and in a phone call, cursing at her and saying, "if you don't talk to me I'm going to go to your job and cause a scene. I don't care about my life." Documents show he called her 20 times in 30 minutes.Court documents also show a carjacking charge at the beginning of 2017.In October 2017, Vergara was charged for beating up a man and given a stay away order from the MTS Imperial Transit Center.The most recent document shows he violated a court order, put in place to prevent domestic violence in January 2019. 1996
