EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A young trick-or-treater sorting through her candy made a stunning discovery."They were excited. Loved Halloween and candy," said Jean Bilbrey.As with so many other families, Halloween night for the Bilbrey's three children - ages 11,9 and 4 - was a blur of costumes, front doors and a steady flow of treats. Their family started around Falmouth Drive and Virgina Court and walked for several hours, stopping by 30 to 50 homes. In all, they filled about six buckets' worth. This past weekend, the kids went about the task of sorting the candy."My middle daughter, who is nine, said 'Mom, Mom, I found something in my candy' and brought me a ring," said Bilbrey.It was a woman's ring, possibly a precious one. "Looks like a wedding band similar to mine. Possibly an anniversary band ... somebody wears on a hand that means something to somebody ... my first thought was we need to get this back to the owner. As a woman, my jewelry, I don't have much but what I do have is very important to me," said Bilbrey.The piece of jewelry likely slipped off while someone was handing out candy. Like any good mystery, there are a few clues, including the candy found next to the ring. "Candy corn and the Sour Patch candies. That's what she had in her hand was the candy corn," said Bilbrey.Bilbrey spread word of the ring on social media, but so far, she's come up empty."I'll keep it safe. I've got it here. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An act of kindness on the job went a long way for an El Cajon family. On Christmas eve, two El Cajon police officers didn’t hesitate to buy dinner for a family living in their car. While always ready to respond to calls, officers never know exactly what they'll find. On this Christmas Eve call, they found a woman named Juanita and her two children, living in their car. Detective Travis Howard is President of the El Cajon Police Officers Association. He says the officers bought the family dinner at Jack in the Box and then closed the call. But after their shift, they wanted to do more, dipping in their own pockets to get the family a hotel room for two nights so they wouldn't be homeless on Christmas. The two police officers who first helped the family didn’t do it for the praise and asked to remain anonymous. 859

EL CAJON (KGTV): Christmas season is always busy at Family Christmas Tree Farms in El Cajon. But this year, they've been busy for months, trying to save their crop.Excessive heat and drought in the summer, combined with an unusually warm fall, had a significant impact on their Monterrey Pines.During July and August, when temperatures reached 100 degrees, the farm doubled the amount of water it gave the trees.Meanwhile, warm weather in the fall kept the trees growing longer than usual. That meant they needed more maintenance than previous years.RELATED: Where to pick up a fresh Christmas tree in San DiegoManager Tyler Stokes says all the extra work and water has forced the company to raise prices, by a few dollars per tree."This is probably the most significant season we've had in terms of extra time and effort we're putting into the trees," he says.It's not just San Diego. Stokes says the prices on the trees they buy from the Northwest are also more expensive. That's because areas of Washington and Oregon also had unusually warm years.Fortunately, he says, the trees handled the heat well, and they didn't lose any of the crops. (KGTV) -- Christian Unified Schools of San Diego welcomed junior and high school students back to campus on Tuesday.The El Cajon-based school district brought elementary school students back to school last week, and district officials said now it's time for the other grades to join.The school's website lists many of the precautions they're taking, including multiple temperature checks. Students will get their temperature checked before they are dropped off at school, and then again before entering the building.Everyone on campus must wear a mask or face shield, and students must wash or sanitize their hands before they enter each classroom.The district says social distancing will be observed in all classrooms. Plexiglass barriers will be at each desk.All the classrooms are equipped with cleaning stations to be used between each class.Teachers will hold school religious services outside, and chapel will have limited seating.The district says each night staff will clean the entire facility. 1028

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Dozens of dogs and cats landed in El Cajon today, after a flight from Louisiana to Gillespie Field. In July, rescue partners at Acadiana Animal Aid in Lafayette, LA helped rescue animals following floods in the area. This month, they've teamed up with the Wings of Rescue to help overcrowded shelters.  The 75 to 90 animals will go to The Rescued Dog, Labradors and Friends Rescue, San Diego Humane Society, and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society.  512
