POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The memory of Poway synagogue shooting victim Lori Gilbert-Kaye is living on through random acts of kindness, which she was known for often doing. Over the weekend, Emily Tolliver went to the Poway Dollar Tree with her 11-year-old son, Shawn. "I was just walking down the aisles, and I saw a toy snake. I was originally thinking in my head, oh, this would be great to scare my mom!" said Shawn. But Shawn quickly realized that the toy was special, noticing a note on the back. "I went over to my mom, and I told her look this says, 'Enjoy this random act of kindness.' And then we kind of read the note together and noticed it was for the person who had died in the shooting," said Shawn. Taped to the back of the toy was a bill and a dime, just enough to pay for that toy.It also had a note from a 5-year-old which read: "In loving memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 8/10/58 - 4/27/19"After posting the experience on Facebook, hundreds of people were moved by the gesture of kindness. On the very day they discovered the note Lori would have turned 61. "I knew that the community would be touched by it, but I was surprised it brought people to tears. Just remembering her and that a 5-year-old was remembering her on her birthday, the way she wants to be remembered, and that's through helping others and doing acts of kindness," said Emily."It really made me feel like anyone can make a difference, at any age or anywhere at any time, you can make a difference," said Shawn. Just last week Gilbert-Kaye's husband spoke at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona, encouraging people there to do good for the world. "Here you have a wonderful, beautiful person where there was really no boundaries of religion, race or color, but she would help everyone, would look for people and help them," said Dr. Kaye. He said it was his wish to see random acts of kindness continue for his late wife. "Just little things in life, giving a little bit to charity, doing a good deed, is my way of preventing bad things from happening," said Dr. Kaye. The Tollivers say they plan to keep the happiness train going. As they decide what their act of kindness will be, they'll do so with Lori in their hearts. 2211

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Poway activated Tuesday a hotline for students to report potential threats to schools. The change comes after a series of threats to San Diego County schools in the days after the Parkland shootings.Messages left on the Poway hotline will be monitored around the clock by the Poway Sheriff’s Station. Callers can remain anonymous.POWAY SCHOOL THREAT HOTLINE844-PUSD-TIP844-787-3847Calls regarding schools that are not in the City of Poway will be sent to the appropriate authorities, city officials said."With threats increasing everywhere, the more eyes and ears we can have in the community, the better,” Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said in a statement. “The hotline will remove barriers that might keep law enforcement from receiving critical information in a timely manner. Poway is the safest city in the County and we intend to keep it that way.RELATED: Timeline shows threats made to San Diego County schoolsVaus suggested the hotline to the Poway City Manager last week. The hotline has the support of the Poway Unified School District, which operates 40 schools in Poway, San Diego, and unincorporated San Diego County communities. The change comes as the district prepares to meet with parents about student safety. The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mt. Carmel High School Performing Arts Center, 9550 Carmel Mountain Road. 1387

President Donald Trump once again floated the idea of adding a "Space Force" as a branch of the US military on Tuesday at the White House.Trump's comments came as he presented the Army college football team with the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, annually awarded to the best college football team among Army, Navy and Air Force."You will be part of the five proud branches of the United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard," Trump said, addressing the Army football team. "And we're actually thinking about a sixth, and that would be the Space Force. Does that make sense?" Trump said. "... because we're getting very big in space, both militarily and for other reasons, and we're seriously thinking about the Space Force."Tuesday wasn't the first time Trump has floated the idea of a military branch dedicated for fighting wars in space. In March at a speech in San Diego, Trump broached the idea for the first time publicly."We may even have a 'space force,'" Trump said, according to Scripps station KGTV in San Diego. "We're doing a tremendous amount of work in space. I said maybe we'll need a new force. We'll call it 'the space force.'""Our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars," Trump continued. "We're way, way behind."The Washington Post points out that the United States signed the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, promising not to test weapons in outer space or establish military bases on the moon or other celestial bodies — though it points out that there is no enforcement mechanism in place to stop the US from doing so.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. President Donald Trump does not like the news that General Motors would close several plants and cut more than 10,000 jobs. Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn on Monday afternoon, Trump said he spoke with CEO Mary Barra and told her he wasn't happy with the decision."I told her I'm not happy about it," Trump told reporters."The United States saved General Motors and for her to take that company out of Ohio is not good," he continued. "I think she's going to put something back in soon."On Monday, GM announced it would close four US-based plants, including two in metro Detroit; the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and the Warren Transmission Operations plant.According to a spokesperson for GM, the plants will be unallocated which means they will no longer produce vehicles in those plants in 2019. According to the company, the future of the plants will be part of contract talks with the UAW next year.“The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future,” Barra said in a release. “We recognize the need to stay in front of changing market conditions and customer preferences to position our company for long-term success.”According to the release, GM will lay off 14,700 factory and white-collar workers. Of those, 8,100 will be white-collar workers that will either take buyouts or be laid off.The company said that the moves will help continue its focus on crossovers, SUVs and trucks. With the move, GM plans to cut 25 percent of the executive staff and 15 percent of the salaried and salaried contract staff. The transition also includes ceasing production of six vehicles; the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS sedan and Cadillac CT6 sedan. According to the company, the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant produces the Volt, Impala, LaCrosse and CT6.Trump said Barra told him the Cruze isn't selling well."Hopefully she’s going to come back and put something, but I told her I’m not happy about it," he added.Barra also was meeting with White House Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow on Monday, a White House official confirms. The meeting has apparently been on the books for weeks and it's just a coincidence that the meeting and the announcement happened on the same day. 2369

President Donald Trump announced he is pushing back his first rally since March to June 20 after facing criticism for holding it during Juneteenth. The rally was originally scheduled for June 19.The rally will take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city that saw extensive violence in 1921 as the city’s prominent black population were brutally victimized as part of mass hate crimes.“Many of my African American friends and supporters have reached out to suggest that we consider changing the date out of respect for this Holiday, and in observance of this important occasion and all that it represents. I have therefore decided to move our rally to Saturday, June 20th, in order to honor their requests,” Trump tweeted.Trump said that the rally had 200,000 requests for tickets.Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day, is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.African-Americans and others celebrate the day much like the Fourth of July with parties and picnics with families and friends. 1027
