WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — West Palm Beach says the number of police cars that had to be pulled off the streets due to engine failure has risen to 49.City Administrator Jeff Green said at this point they believe a tainted fuel shipment in the middle of March is to blame. All of those cars had traces of biodiesel in their tanks, which are meant for unleaded only.West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer David Lefont said it is not impacting public safety since the agency is supplementing with rental cars.“We have captains driving around in minivans,” Lefont said.Seventeen patrol cars have gotten new engines and are back in service.The other affected cars are non-marked cars.Green said Miami-Dade County police reported they had to pull 120 cars with the same issue.In West Palm Beach the cars affected are all Ford, which is why the automaker is investigating the case as well.But Green said at this point they believe it was the fuel shipment. With a total of six adopted and foster children, Keri Penland’s family is an exercise in planning and patience.“Trying to do school with them has been insane,” she said.All of her kids are school-aged; some have learning disabilities. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, they--along with tens of millions of other students across the country--became part of a nationwide experiment in remote learning.Her verdict?“I don't know how anybody is doing this, to be honest,” Penland said. “It's not possible.”And it turns out, she's not alone.“We found that remote learning is really failing our most vulnerable learners,” said Justin Ruben, who is with the nonprofit “ParentsTogether.” The group recently conducted a survey of more than 1,500 families across the country to see how remote learning was going.Among the findings:When compared to a family making 0,000 a year, lower-income families--making ,000 or less-- are ten times more likely to have children doing little to no remote learning.Those families are also five times more likely to attend a school not offering distance learning materials at all and 13 percent of them didn’t even have a computer device or internet access.Yet, the numbers were even worse for families of children with special needs, who usually get individualized support at school. That stands for measles, mumps and rubella.Most children get the vaccine. It could explain why kids are less impacted by COVID-19.Testing on mice found these kinds of "live" vaccines boosted cells' ability to fight off sepsis.Sepsis is ultimately what's causing organ problems and inflammation in many adults who have contracted the novel coronavirus.“The idea behind it is, if these live attenuated vaccines are inducing the cells that will inhibit or dampen the sepsis, that gives the regular immune response time enough to get rid of the infection,” said Dr. Paul Fidel, a professor at LSU.The results of the "live" vaccine test on mice were undeniable.Researchers also point to what happened on the USS Roosevelt, where more than 1,200 sailors contracted the virus. A few were hospitalized and one died.All U.S. Navy recruits get MMR vaccinations.The professors are starting a grassroots campaign for adults to get the MMR booster.“If we're right, wow you would have the cells that would inhibit or dampen the sepsis if you ever got infected with COVID and if we're wrong, so OK you have a booster for MMR and that can’t hurt you at all,” said Fidel.“I think this concept with live attenuated vaccines inducing this response that controls the inflammation as opposed to targeting the actual viral infection, it’s going to serve as a stop gap measure until we get a real legitimate vaccine developed that’s been shown to be efficacious and safe,” said Dr. Mairi Noverr, a professor at Tulane’s school of medicine.The MMR vaccine theory is being tested on primates now.
