A 3-year-old suffered second-degree burns after falling into a small thermal feature at Yellowstone National Park.The National Park Service (NPS) says the child took off running from a trail before slipping and falling into the feature Friday morning. It happened near the Midway Geyser Basin.The child, who suffered burns to the lower body and back, was airlifted to the Burn Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.According to NPS, the ground in hydrothermal areas, like at Yellowstone, is fragile and thin. Just below the surface is scalding water.Visitors to Yellowstone are asked to always remain on boardwalks and trails. They’re also encouraged to exercise extreme caution around thermal features.This certainly isn’t the first time someone has been injured in a thermal area like this. This past May, NPS says another visitor, who illegally entered the park, fell into thermal feature at Old Faithful while taking photos.Similar instances have been reported in previous years as well. In 2016 and 2000, people actually died as a result of falling into hot springs, NPS says. 1099

A big winner in this year's election was the marijuana industry, as five states approved some form of legalization.Mississippi approved it for medicinal use. Arizona, Montana and New Jersey approved it for recreational use. South Dakota approved it for both and became the first state to approve both forms of marijuana in the same election.The Drug Policy Alliance says it never expected the support in some states, but hopes it sends a message to lawmakers in Washington D.C.“It doesn’t just stop at marijuana reform,” said Matt Sutton with the Drug Policy Alliance. “People are really seeing drugs as being something that shouldn’t be criminalized in the U.S. and they definitely took that with them to the ballot box.”Changes could happen on the federal level. Congress was supposed to vote on the MORE Act in September. The bill would decriminalize marijuana by removing it from the list of controlled substances and expunge many previous convictions.The Drug Policy Alliance says the bill is now expected to go to a vote by the end of the year and hopes the momentum at the state level translates to a victory at the federal level.“I am hoping that this wave of victories across the country will definitely send a message to Congress and really light a fire under them to pass the MORE Act,” said Sutton.It wasn't just marijuana that won on election night. Oregon voters overwhelmingly approved a proposal to decriminalize possession of all drugs.People caught possessing hard drugs would have the option to pay a 0 fine or attend an addiction recovery center. A 24-year-old man assaulted an officer, stole his gun and turned the firearm on himself at Brandywine Country Club Wednesday morning, Summit County Sheriff's Office said.Police responded at around 5:19 a.m. to the Brandywine Country Club for reports of damaged property. Brandywine is located in Peninsula, which is midway between Cleveland and Akron.When the responding officer arrived, he found a 24-year-old man on the property. During their encounter, the man assaulted the officer, striking him in the head and knocking him to the ground.As the officer laid semi-conscious on the ground, the man removed the officer's service weapon from his holster. An employee at the golf course went to assist the officer as the man who struck him fled on foot.A short time later, the officer and the employee heard a shot fired in the distance.Several officers arrived on scene to conduct a perimeter check of the property. The man was found lying on the golf course with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the sheriff's office reports.He was taken to Akron City Hospital-Summa Health, where he was later pronounced dead.The assaulted officer was treated and released from the hospital.The shooting remains under investigation. 1252

(KGTV) -- Orange County residents Wednesday took to social media to post photos of the blackened sky caused by the Holy Fire, which continues to grow. According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the blaze exploded in size Thursday and is still only five percent contained. Photos posted to social media show the massive fire burning in the distance as thick, gray smoke fills the sky. Scroll through the images below:  454
