on Facebook as their driver was seen speeding through the streets of Richmond.John Murray and Tameka Swann said they were picked up from their home just before 8 p.m. Monday for a night out on the town. But shortly after pulling away, they said someone rear-ended their Uber.“Our Uber attempted to pull over so that they exchange information, but the car didn’t stop behind us. They went around us and sped off, and that’s when our Uber sped off behind him,” Swann said.Murray began to stream their trip on Facebook Live from the backseat.“Nobody would’ve known that would’ve happened if I didn’t get that on camera,” he said. The video showed the Uber driver call 911 and hand his cell phone to Swann. The couple pleaded for the driver to stop as he sped through stoplights and stop signs.Video shows that the 911 dispatcher demanded the driver stop.“The driver won’t let us out. He’s trying to catch the guy because he hit us,” Swann told the dispatcher. The Uber driver then pulled onto West Broad Street and raced through several more red lights, according to the video. Then, the couple said an SUV crashed into the side of their car at West Broad Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The video showed the driver continuing to speed away, narrowly missing a bicyclist.“I feel like he had tunnel vision. I feel like he didn’t focus on anything else,” Swann said. The driver eventually stopped at West Marshall Street and Hermitage Road, where they met an officer.“That was the scariest moment of my life,” Swann said. “I have never been that scared in my life. It was a nightmare.”“Richmond Police detectives are investigating a hit and run incident that happened around 8:15 p.m. last night near Arthur Ashe Boulevard and West Broad Street,” a Richmond Police spokesperson said. “We ask that anyone with information about the incident to call Hit and Run Detective G. Drago at 804-646-1369.”The couple said they went to the hospital following the accident, but suffered only minor bruises.A spokesperson with Uber said they are also investigating the ride.“This driver’s behavior is concerning, and we have removed his access to the app pending investigation,” an Uber spokeswoman said. This story was originally published by Brendan King on 2241

in Highlands County. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a body found in a wooded area in Lake Placid, Florida, a little before Thursday afternoon. Deputies identified the deceased man as 45-year-old Melvin Olds Jr.Following the investigation, deputies noticed Olds suffered injuries that would come from an animal attack, believed to be from a pack of dogs. The medical examiner also responded to the scene and could not find any injuries other than the ones caused by the dogs. Autopsy results found more than 100 dog bites on the victim's body, the sheriff's office said on Friday. A final determination of what killed Olds will be made after toxicology results. A pack of dogs was later spotted in the area shortly after Olds' body was discovered. Deputies say six dogs have been captured in the area and their bite size matches wounds on Old's body. However, authorities say that alone is not enough to say for sure that they were the animals involved. DNA from the captured dogs will be compared to DNA collected from the wounds, deputies say. Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services officers have set traps in the area and Animal Services units have been patrolling the area looking for loose dogs who may have been involved in the attack."While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive. We don’t want anyone else to be injured.” 1617

It has quarantined its networks and been forced to provide most of its municipal services manually."It's frustrating. It's unfortunate. of a lifetime."Watching your dad fade away sucks," said Colby Webb. Colby's dad, Larry, is fading fast after being diagnosed in May with bile duct cancer. He's now being cared for by Hospice of the Valley. With the limited time he has left, Colby was determined to give his dad one last thrill. "My dad will tell you the Corvette, that's the heart of American, it's American muscle, Americans want a Corvette," said Colby. Larry was no exception, passing along his love for the Corvette and cars to his son. "He asked when is this new Corvette going to come out, and my wife said January of 2020. The look in my dad's face when it clicked, and he realized he probably was not going to see this release just floored us, it broke my heart," said Colby. That's when Colby decided to call General Motors, who immediately agreed to deliver the car to Midway Chevrolet. "We invited all of his friends down, all the family members were down there, everybody we could call to come to see him, and see this Corvette," said Colby. Video from that day shows Larry thrilled as can be. He checked out the inside and outside of his dream car while surrounded by those he loved most. "I really did think that was his final hurrah," said Colby. Colby posted the video of the experience on Reddit, which got thousands of views. Little did he know, someone else with an similar love for cars was watching too. "I got an email two weeks later from producers with 'Jay Leno's Garage,'" said Colby. Within days the Webbs were on a private plane flying to Burbank. "We get him off the plane; there's Jay. My dad looks at my wife and goes that's Jay Leno," said Colby. All of it arranged in secret. Leno had a prototype Corvette ready to go. "Jay's not gonna call you out and let you just sit in the car," said Colby. Together, they took it for a spin, then stopped by Jay's garage for a tour of his massive car collection. "Jay Leno is one of the nicest people and his crew. Everybody was just the nicest people ever; they took care of everything," said Colby. A photo on the plane ride back showed Larry once again flashing his enduring smile. "I think it will be one of the last things he thinks about," said Colby. Larry's experience will eventually air as an episode on "Jay Leno's Garage" in the coming months. With polling suggesting that President Donald Trump is losing the support of suburban voters, he made a strong play on Wednesday to try to capture the suburban vote.In a tweet sent on Wednesday, he backed a previously announced order to rescind an Obama-era rule that was meant to reduce bias in public housing access. Trump argues that public housing in suburbs drives up crime and lowers property values. The Obama administration rule was one intended to reinforce a Johnson-administration mandate of preventing bias in public housing access. The Obama administration intended to require public housing administrators to report barriers to obtain public housing.HUD will still have the ability to investigate organizations over fair housing practices, and can rescind funding.“I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood,” Trump tweeted. “Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule. Enjoy!”Advocates for public housing say that the Trump-administration order could hurt minority and disabled people.“People should not be shut out of the American Dream based on the color of their skin. However, decades of redlining have cemented this injustice, perpetuated a massive racial wealth gap between Black and white families, and sustained the continued distribution of resources and opportunity based on race,” said Nikitra Bailey, executive vice president at the Center for Responsible Lending. “The government helped create entrenched, pernicious residential segregation and has an obligation to undo it. By rejecting the Fair Housing Act’s mission to dismantle segregation and the inequity it created, this Administration is eschewing its responsibility and will be on the wrong side of history.”The National Low Income Housing Coalition said that despite Trump’s claims, introducing low-income residents into communities can “generate positive returns for taxpayers.” The group cited a Harvard study in making the claim. “The results of this study demonstrate that offering low-income families housing vouchers and assistance in moving to lower-poverty neighborhoods has substantial benefits for the families themselves and for taxpayers,” the study's authors wrote. “It appears important to target such housing vouchers to families with young children—perhaps even at birth—to maximize the benefits. Our results provide less support for policies that seek to improve the economic outcomes of adults through residential relocation. More broadly, our findings suggest that efforts to integrate disadvantaged families into mixed-income communities are likely to reduce the persistence of poverty across generations.”Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson, who said he lived in public housing growing up, said that the rule of forcing public housing providers to have documentation that of following fair housing rules was a burden.“After reviewing thousands of comments on the proposed changes to the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) regulation, we found it to be unworkable and ultimately a waste of time for localities to comply with, too often resulting in funds being steered away from communities that need them most,” said Secretary Carson. “Instead, the Trump Administration has established programs like Opportunity Zones that are driving billions of dollars of capital into underserved communities where affordable housing exists, but opportunity does not. Programs like this shift the burden away from communities so they are not forced to comply with complicated regulations that require hundreds of pages of reporting and instead allow communities to focus more of their time working with Opportunity Zone partners to revitalize their communities so upward mobility, improved housing, and home ownership is within reach for more people.“Washington has no business dictating what is best to meet your local community’s unique needs.”But advocates say the federal government can play a key role in ensuring access to public housing.“Decades of experience show us that strong HUD requirements, guidance and oversight are absolutely essential to rooting out the structural racism in housing,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “Without critical civil rights protections like the 2015 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule, a devastating race to the bottom that will harm Black communities is the inevitable result. Once again, the Trump administration is undertaking action intended to drag America back into the Jim Crow era of racial segregation.” 4790
