KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom. The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said. The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

Jay Leno's 90-year-old uncle is still trapped in the seventh floor of a Florida apartment building. He has enough food and his phone works, but there's no electricity and the temperatures continue to hover in the high 80s and 90s."You know how hot it gets," Leno told CNN backstage at the "Hand in Hand" benefit, a one-hour, celebrity-packed telethon that aired Tuesday to raise funds for those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. But, said Leno, "He got through WWII, he can get through this."Getting through it is just the start for those affected.Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas and Louisiana over a 6-day period, with losses estimated to be as much as billion. The full scale of Hurricane Irma's impact is still being accessed. There have been?at least 24 Irma-related fatalities in the United States, including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. And on Tuesday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said an estimated 25% of houses in the Florida Keys were destroyed and another 65% suffered major damage. The telethon, which aired across 15 networks and streamed online, included performances from Stevie Wonder, Usher, Blake Shelton, Tori Kelly and Luis Fonsi. Texas native George Strait, joined by some of his fellow country artists, was the last performance of the night. The set included a medley of songs live from San Antonio, including Strait's song "If It Wasn't for Texas."Over 60 famous faces -- including George Clooney, Julia Robert and Oprah -- also took part from Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville. At the close of the show, Billy Crystal put the total raised at more than million, with that number expected to climb. The special will air on a delay on the west coast.Organizations benefiting from money raised by the telethon include Habitat for Humanity, Save the Children, the Rebuild Texas Fund, and the ASPCA.Tuesday's program highlighted survivor and victim stories, as well as tales of heroic saves by first responders and ordinary people alike. Among them was the story of a group of people who formed a human chain to save an elderly man from his submerged vehicle during the worst of Harvey's flooding."If there's one silver lining, it's the fact that people are helping one another," Leno said. 2279

KEARNY MESA (CNS) - Four men were wanted for robbing a convenience store in Kearny Mesa Sunday, police said.A clerk at the Circle K on Balboa Avenue just east of Interstate 805 was working by herself around 8:45 a.m. Sunday when four men came into the store, looked around and left without making a purchase, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The four returned about eight minutes later, and one of them pointed a knife at the clerk's abdomen and demanded cigarettes, Heims said. The total amount of property stolen was not known, according to Heims. The suspects, all men in their early 20s, were described as:-- 5-feet-7-inches tall, about 160 pounds with black hair and green eyes, wearing a black hoodie with white strings and black pajama pants;-- 5-feet-3-inches tall, heavyset with black hair, wearing a black hoodie with white strings and black pajama pants;-- 5-feet-2-inches tall, about 115 pounds with black hair, also wearing a black hoodie with white strings and black pajama pants;-- and a man of unknown height, with black hair wearing a black and red leather jacket.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident. 1227

KENOSHA, Wis. — In an open letter, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers asked President Donald Trump to reconsider his planned visit to Kenosha on Tuesday."I am concerned your presence will only hinder our healing," Evers wrote in the letter on Sunday. "...an in-person visit from you will require a massive re-direction of these resources to support your visit at a time when it is critical that we continue to remain focused on keeping the people of Kenosha safe and supporting the community's response."In response, the White House said that Trump's visit would continue as scheduled."The White House has been humbled by the outreach of individuals from Kenosha who have welcomed the President's visit and are longing for leadership to support local law enforcement and businesses that have been vandalized," White House spokesperson Judd Deere wrote in a statement. "President Trump looks forward to visiting on Tuesday and helping this great city heal and rebuild."During a press conference on Monday, City of Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian was also against Trump visiting. “We want everything to calm down. We want to give people an opportunity to talk before the president comes into town.”It's been one week since Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey. Days of protests, looting, and fires followed. During unrest last Tuesday night, investigators believe 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse traveled more than a dozen miles to the city and later shot and killed two people and injured a third."People are scared, people are tense," said Kenosha resident Austin Kitchens.Later on Sunday, several Kenosha County supervisors also wrote a letter to Trump, countering the governor and asking the President not to cancel his plans to visit."Kenoshans are hurting and looking for leadership, and your leadership in this time of crisis is greatly appreciated by those devastated by the violence in Kenosha," the letter reads. Seven supervisors, including Zach Rodriguez, Gabe Nudo, Amy Maurer, Jeff Wamboldt, Mark Nordigian, Erin Decker, and Lon Wienke, signed it.Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, also tweeted that the President should rethink his visit. Kaul is leading the investigation into the shooting of Jacob Blake.Other Democrats agree with the governor."There are a number of ways the President can help if wants to be helpful, but ultimately divisive rhetoric at this time will not help our community heal and grieve," State Rep. Tip McGuire, D-Kenosha, said. Some people in Kenosha said they do not want the President to visit. Others, like Ruth Simon, say that while they are worried that tensions will flare again, she's excited for the President to be in Kenosha."Because he's done a lot, I feel he's done a lot for us," Simon said.Republicans in Wisconsin believe the President is visiting at the right time and that his presence will show leadership."I reached out to the President on Tuesday, and he said he would provide additional resources to the city of Kenosha, those were essential to get in," Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wisconsin, said. "Many men and women stood up to help provide that public safety in Kenosha, and the President is coming to say thank you."Steil said he would be in Kenosha with the President on Tuesday, and it will give him a chance to talk about how the city can move forward."We've now established public safety in the city of Kenosha, we now begin the healing process, and the rebuilding process, and I think it's a great opportunity to have that conversation with the President," Steil said. This story was originally published by Stephanie Haines on WTMJ in Milwaukee. 3665
