NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The National Museum of African American Music is finally set to open next year.The grand opening was delayed this summer due to several pandemic setbacks, but a new date has been set for January 18, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Museum President and CEO Henry Hicks says it's going to be a very special day as NMAAM has been in the works for 22 years. Hicks says museum leaders were excited to open in the summer of this year, but the pandemic made it tough. Construction material was delayed, and they had to implement social distancing requirements for crews working.There are still some finishing touches being made on the museum but overall it’s ready for Nashvillians and tourists alike. Hicks says the museum will be a place that connects all generations and all walks of life through music.“Nashville is Music City and that really got its start with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. It evolved through an era of R&B and jazz being very prominent in the city and of course country music and I think the city has a job of embracing that country or Music City heritage," said Hicks. "This museum just really builds upon that.”NMAAM members will be the first ones to get access, but the following weekend, it will open to the general public. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- An organization in the South Bay is using dance to educate others about the Filipino culture. PASACAT, which is based in National City, is a Philippine Performing Arts Company and educational center. Anamaria Cabato is the current executive director. For her, it is a family passion. Her parents founded the organization nearly 50 years ago. Over the years, she has had nearly a dozen family members involved in the dance troupe. “It brings me to tears,” Cabato told 10News. “This is a family in itself and to have your own members of your family [involved] is just icing on the cake.” Lupe Macario is Anamaria’s sister and the grandmother of a couple of the current dancers. “We’re just delighted that they take up and embrace the culture,” Macario said. Her granddaughter, Gabby Macario, is now performing the same dances she used to perform in the 1970s.Gabby Macario, like many of the young dancers in PASACAT, was born in the United States. She said learning traditional Filipino dances is something she loves. She’s been dancing since she was five-years-old. “It’s really fun because I like learning all the dances,” Gabby said. 10News asked what would tell others who have never seen this type of dancing.“I would first tell them to try to see what we do and introduce them to what we do,” the 10-year-old said. PASACAT has had its share of setbacks, including major damage to the studio during a storm in December. The storm damaged the roof, the floor, and ruined many traditional dance costumes. They continue to raise funds for the organization through a GoFundMe page. Still, Cabato said they persevere for a bigger cause. “There’s a lack of understanding and if we appreciate all cultures of the world because this opens the doors to other people, and to understand them. You find that there’s similarities and if you find those similarities, then there’s no reason to have differences,” Cabato said. 1954

MONROE COUNTY, Penn. -- Punxsutawney Phil is a wanted mammal, and Pennsylvania law enforcement officials allege his crime is "deception."On Groundhog Day, Phil saw his shadow, declaring to the world there’d be six more weeks of winter.The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office issue is simple, according to the wanted poster posted on Facebook: It's been more than six weeks since his prediction, and snow's still falling.Phil said winter would be over by March 16, but by the second day of spring, the county was in the middle of “yet another snowstorm.”For those on the lookout, Phil is a 22-inch-long male, weighing around 20 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865

MISSION BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - After five years of delays and construction, the Plunge Pool in Mission Beach is scheduled to re-open on June 1."There was a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross with this thing, so we've taken our time," explains Belmont Park General Manager Steve Thomas. "We've invested the capital to make sure that things are where we want them to be. It feels good to be involved in a project like that."In addition to rebuilding the pool, the new Plunge will include a state of the art fitness center, run by Fit Athletic Club.The pool, which opened in 1925, closed in 2014 in dire need of repairs. That process didn't begin until January of 2017 because of issues with the Coastal Commission and other government entities.Throughout construction, people in Mission Beach have been wondering when it will reopen while reminiscing of their time spent in the old Plunge."Our kids, we used to bring them here when they were little," says Sharon Delgadillo. She and her husband Henry walk by the Plunge while they exercise in Mission Beach and have stopped frequently to check on its progress. "It will be awesome that another generation can enjoy this pool too.""It's a piece of our history," says Mission Beach Town Council President Matthew Gardner. He says the management from Belmont Park and the Fit Athletic Club has done an excellent job at providing updates to the council at their monthly meetings. He was thrilled to hear they have an opening date set for June 1st."You better believe I'll be first in line to get a membership for the pool," says Gardner.The Fit is already selling memberships to the Club, which will include pool access. A manager says they're offering a /month special through the end of March.Meanwhile, Belmont Park management says the pool will have its own membership that people can buy if they don't want the full athletic club experience. Those will be sold as monthly or daily passes. Belmont Park is still working out the price points for that.Business owners around Mission Beach and Belmont Park also feel the pool will be a catalyst for more economic growth in the area. Gardner owns a beach rental store next to the pool and says he's already seen an increase of customers who ask about the pool."I built my rental shop where it is because of how much effort they put into the pool," he says.Belmont Park officials say the unique mix of a large pool near the beach will bring in locals and tourists."It's going to be right up there next to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo," says Thomas of how popular he thinks the Plunge will be when it re-opens.
