SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Public health experts are worried that with COVID-19 cases surging, family gatherings during the upcoming holiday season could make for an epidemiological disaster. While officials are urging people to follow stay-at-home orders and avoid indoor gatherings with those outside of the immediate household, they realize that many families will get together regardless of the risk.“There are a lot of reasons why don’t do the thing that your physician or your county board of supervisors would label compliant," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, a social epidemiologist and associate professor at UC San Diego. "And so the best thing that we can do is say, OK. In the absence of perfection, here are the other things you can do to protect yourself.”Fielding-Miller recommends that a family that insists on getting together for Thanksgiving create, in effect, its own version of a bubble such as the one successfully used for the restart of the NBA season. To create the safest bubble possible requires invitees to the dinner to isolate beginning at least by Wednesday the week before Thanksgiving. Each person should then get a COVID test three days before the holiday so there is enough time to get the result back. Fielding-Miller said it's critical to have a conversation with guests to make sure they understand and agree to those safety measures. "When we talk about bubbles, your bubble is really only as safe as the person who is the least interested in maintaining the safety of the bubble," Fielding-Miller said.Once Thanksgiving Day arrives, eating outdoors is much safer than indoors. Fielding-Miller also suggests trying to keep members of different households spaced out as much as possible. "You need a plan for, I would say, testing five to eight days after you spent time with your family, so you can immediately let people know if you are positive and they need to get tested,” Fielding-Miller said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - PhaseBio, a company based out of San Diego and Pennsylvania, announced it would be starting a clinical trial for a drug that could help keep severe COVID-19 patients from needing a ventilator. “If you are infected with coronavirus and you’re admitted to hospital, we’re trying to catch those patients before they have a rapid decline and prevent intubation or other more severe complications of the coronavirus,” said Jonathan Mow, CEO of PhaseBio. The drug is called PB1046 and is a “novel, once-weekly, subcutaneously-injected vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptor.” It was originally being researched for use on patients with high blood pressure, said Mow. But they pivoted when they realized it might have properties that could help prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a potentially deadly condition caused by the inflammation of the lungs due to the body’s immune response to the coronavirus. “We realized that the characteristics of our drug fit nicely to what we would want to control in the complications in coronavirus patients,” said Mow. The clinical trial will take place at 20 different locations and involve about 210 subjects who have been hospitalized and require oxygen, but have not been intubated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Pounds of marijuana, concentrates and edibles, cash, and handguns were seized from a Pacific Beach pot dispensary Thursday.San Diego Police raided Truly Green, located at 4150 Mission Blvd., at about 8 a.m. for illegally operating the business.The seizure included 57 pounds of high-grade marijuana, more than 1400 marijuana concentrates and edibles, ,100 in cash, and two handguns.Two employees were arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and operating a business without a permit. They were released with a citation.Police said the owners were not present, but police said they will be charged. 637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Murder during rape is a special circumstance, meaning no bail for the man accused of killing an elderly woman in her Normal Heights home in 1987.Kevin Ford, 62, didn’t have much to say in court Tuesday, charged with the murder and rape of 79-year-old Grace Hayden. Some advances in technology and persistent police work helping make today happen after three decades.The video remains just as chilling today as it was 31 years ago. Hayden's body was wheeled out of her home. Her neighbor told 10News reporter Steve Fiorina back then, that she was a friendly neighbor."She was loveable, friendly, never bothered, as far as I know, anyone," the neighbor said."Never went out because she was something like handicapped. She was a nice lady," another neighbor said.The case went cold until a single fingerprint found on Hayden’s stove. And some hard work led investigators to an arrest in North Carolina.San Diego DA investigator Tony Johnson was reviewing the unsolved case when he found that fingerprint. He submitted it to a national database and got a hit from a 20-15 warrant out of North Carolina.Three years ago he talked with KPBS saying, “a case goes cold primarily when the initial team that’s investigating the case has run out of leads.”Ford was extradited to San Diego. Tuesday, he was arraigned before a judge. A public defender said ford denies all charges.Ford is due back in court on Aug. 7. 1460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 1,500 people throughout San Diego County are without power as winter storms sweep through the area. According to the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map, 1,494 people are without power due to an unplanned outage. Affected communities stretch from the South Bay into North and East County. SDG&E says it expects to have all power restored by 11 p.m. At this time, it’s unclear what caused the outages. Click here to view the outage map.
