SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine biologists and other experts are at Fiesta Island Tuesday morning to try to determine what caused the death of a large whale.The gray whale was discovered by lifeguards on the shore of Blacks Beach Monday at about 11 a.m.The dead whale was eventually towed from the Torrey Pines area to Fiesta Island, arriving at 3:30 p.m.Officials with the National Marine Fisheries were called to Fiesta Island to perform a necropsy.After Tuesday's examination, the whale is expected to be transported to the Miramar Landfill.  552

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Memorial Day weekend will see the most travelers out and about than in the last 12 years.More than 41.5 million Americans will be traveling this weekend, a five percent jump from last year, according to AAA. The increase in nearly 2 million travelers also means longer delays.
