CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – A Chula Vista family came home to their house completely ransacked by burglars.“It was a total mess,” homeowner Eric Deas said. “It was like a hurricane came into my house.”Deas says he left for his aunt's house around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. When he got back around 3 p.m. he found that someone had tried to get into his backdoor, then smashed a window to get in.The thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and electronics. But they also raided his fridge, drank his alcohol, and ate his food. They trashed his house, dousing his floors and furniture with booze.  Deas even found feces in the upstairs bathroom. "They didn't flush," he said.He also found a shoe in his aquarium.  About ten of his prized fish were dead.  He thinks the thieves dumped wine in the fish tank.“It looked like they had a good time,” he said.  “They had a party in my house. Unfortunately, it was a 'damage party.'”A neighbor’s security camera caught a white BMW park in the neighborhood. Then it appears of group of teens got out of the car and started walking towards Deas' house. The video was taken in the same time frame of the break-in. It was hard to make out faces or a license plate, but Deas thinks its video of the party bandits.The intruders also took something very sentimental from him.“My mom wrote me these handwritten notes. She passed away two years ago,” Deas said, “Things that sad, 'love you, ma.' It was personal.”Deas doesn't think he will get them back.“I call them punks; they don’t deserve to be people. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters worked Friday to extinguish a brush fire that sparked in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista.Officials said the fire started sometime around 12 p.m. near Heritage Rd. and Olympic Parkway, according to Chula Vista Fire Department. The fire began not far from the Republic Services Otay Landfill.Firefighters said the forward rate of the fire had been stopped at 10 acres just before 2:30 p.m. No structures were lost and no injuries were reported.Neighbors came out to watch firefighters work and monitor the blaze.Some were concerned, thinking of past fires that charred neighborhoods, while others like Jessica Rojas had faith in the firefighters, "we've been hearing like a lot of firetrucks and so we figured they were doing a good job of putting out the fires."In addition to CVPD crews on the ground, SDG&E's Sky Maverick helicopter was called to help battle the flames from above with water drops.Chula Vista Fire Captain Linda D'Orsi said this is a great reminder of the importance of defensible space, saying it's not too late in the year to do that yard work. (KGTV) — Bullet holes were found on a Chula Vista apartment building following reports of a shooting on Saturday, but no victims or suspects were found.Chula Vista Police say a report of gunshots at Eucalyptus Park on C Street near Fourth Avenue was made just after 6 p.m. When officers arrived, no one was found at the scene.Police say nobody in the apartment building was injured.Anyone with information is asked to call CVPD at 619-691-5151 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 506

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay family is trying to help residents at senior care facilities one letter at a time.When Mariana Hughes learned of the ban on non-essential visitors at local senior care facilities, the Eastlake High English teacher came up with an idea."It just broke my heart. I didn't want them to be forgotten," said Hughes.Hughes contacted four facilities in the South Bay, including several veterans homes. Her 14-year-old son Christian then started writing letters, a bunch of them. The letters are aimed at injecting a little joy."I'm just going to write more letters, whatever I can do to make people happy ... because I know these are hard times for them," he said.Hughes posted her idea on Facebook, which quickly caught fire. Others promised to write their own letters. Some sent 10news photos of children showing their cards, drawings and letters, after another teacher began her own campaign to send letters to nursing homes in the East County."If we get the word out and this catches on, lots more seniors that are lonely, afraid and sad are going to see that their community loves them," said Hughes.It's a love received, word by word."We can't maybe fix the whole world, but each person can do something every single day to lift up other people ... and this is our opportunity," said Hughes.Hughes says she's taking precautions, including washing hands before letter writing, and using stickers instead of stamps. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista business specializing in hand-woven bags faced a logistics mess due to overtaxed delivery systems during the pandemic.Daisy Romero founded El Cholo's Bag back in 2008. It's a completely online business and in 2020 sales skyrocketed,"The e-commerce side just blew up," she said.The business is rooted in Mexican tradition, which is how she describes her bags, "very traditional Mexican bag, they’re made from recycled plastic. They’re the kind of bag our grandmothers used to use for the market."Many like the fact the bag is pandemic friendly."You can wash them, Lysol it, wipe it down with a Clorox wipe, it’s easy," she said.But, her small business hit a big shipping problem."At one point I just had dozens of lost packages, throughout the system and it didn’t matter if it was UPS or USPS, it didn’t matter. Everything was just so strained," says Romero. The shipping issue strained Romero's bottom line as well."It is a struggle, you know sometimes you’re in the negative because you had to refund three packages and you haven’t sold anything that day," she said solemnly.She learned from the challenges, insuring her business so the next time a package gets lost, she doesn't get burned.She's also working around the system, driving to San Diego customers."It’s easier to make sure your local customers get their product and it’s not going to be stuck in some distribution center even though it’s five miles away in Chula Vista," Romero said.As for her dreams, the pandemic put them on pause."My biggest goal for this year was to break into the European market and go to Paris and do all these things. 2020 was like, 'not today,'" she said.She hopes to bring her artisans' work to the world and share a bit of tradition. 1777
