SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — Businesses along the U.S.-Mexico border are bracing for a potential border shutdown, after President Donald Trump tweeted the threat Friday morning."If you get a day or two of closures, then there are a lot of businesses that won’t make it," predicted Jason Wells, the executive director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. He says, back in November when the San Ysidro Port of Entry was closed for six hours on a Sunday morning, it caused a .3 million economic loss to the businesses in the area.RELATED: Trump threatens to 'close' parts of U.S.-Mexican border if Mexico doesn't halt immigrationAcross the entire southern border, he says there is about billion in commerce every day that could be impacted by a closure.A lot of that impact would be felt on the Mexican side as well."This is a heavy handed ploy to get Mexico to react," commented Wells. 896

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection paid a staffing consultant million that has so far yielded two rank-and-file employees, a new federal watchdog report says. The Office of Inspector General says CBP signed a nearly 0 million contract with Accenture in November 2017, meant to hire 7,500 new workers across departments. But a year later, Accenture has hired two workers. “Accenture is nowhere near satisfying its 7,500-person hiring goal over the next five years,” the report says. “Further, CBP has used significant staffing and resources to help Accenture do the job for which it was contracted.”Accenture said in a statement it remains focused on fulfilling CBP’s exceptions. A CBP spokesperson says the agency takes issue with some of the reports findings, but acknowledged the contract has been a challenge. CBP says the .6 million to Accenture has gone to creating a hiring structure, an applicant care center, marketing and conducting various steps in the hiring process.“CBP is constantly working to strengthen its hiring capabilities to ensure staffing for critical frontline operations, while maintaining our high personnel standards,” the CBP said in a statement. The lack of workers is being felt along the San Ysidro border, where wait times can be upwards of two hours, and not every booth is staffed by an agent.“Anytime you have people waiting in line instead of working, instead of shopping, instead of going to restaurants, you’re losing money,” said Cindy Gompper-Graves, head of the South County Economic Development Council, who described the report as a bit troubling. 1634

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The amount of snow blanketing the Sierra Nevada is even larger than the 2017 snowpack that pulled the state out of a five-year drought, California water officials said.As of Thursday, the snowpack measured 202% of average after a barrage of storms throughout winter and spring, according to the Department of Water Resources. The wet weather has slowed but not stopped, with thunderstorms prompting flash flood warnings Sunday in the central and southern parts of the state. At this time last year, the snowpack measured 6% of average — making this year 33 times bigger than 2018, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. In 2017, the snowpack measured 190% of average. The snowpack supplies about 30 percent of state water needs. In the Tahoe Basin, Squaw Valley ski resort has seen so much snow it plans to keep its slopes open until least July 5. In May alone, Squaw recorded 37 inches (94 centimeters).State officials consider the most important snowpack measurement to be the one taken around April 1 because that's typically when storm activity subsides."And then after that the sun's highest position in the sky contributes to rapid melting. This year, that didn't happen and we had late season snow," National Weather Service forecaster Idamis Del Valle told the newspaper. This year's April 1 reading put the snowpack at 176% of average, making it the fifth-largest on that date, with records going back to 1950, the Chronicle said.___Information from: San Francisco Chronicle, http://www.sfgate.com 1528

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 70-year-old U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was arrested Wednesday after prosecutors say he strangled a traveler in San Ysidro.Prosecutors say while on duty, Harvey Booker, 70, strangled a traveler at the San Ysidro Port of Entry that resulted in “bodily harm.”No details on what led up to the incident were released about the July 8 incident.“There is no excuse for law enforcement officials to abuse the significant trust and power placed in them,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “Law enforcement takes great pride in protecting the civil rights of all people. When that trust is betrayed, we must hold that officer accountable.”CBP responded with the following comment.“U.S. Customs and Border Protection stresses professionalism, honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission and does not tolerate actions by any employee that would tarnish the reputation of our agency,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations. The agency says they are cooperating with the FBI and DHS in the investigation. If convicted, Booker faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine for deprivation of rights under the color of law.Booker’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 7. 1250
