EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A group firefighters battling a house fire in El Cajon rescued two of their own from under burning debris Tuesday morning.Heartland Fire & Rescue crews were called to a two-story structure fire in the 1300 block of Helix View Drive around 3 a.m. and discovered a home fully engulfed with flames reaching as high as 50-feet.As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, a burning section of the home collapsed trapping two of them. Both were quickly pulled out from under the rubble.One of the firefighters was treated and transported to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries. The condition of the second firefighter is unknown at this time.The homeowner told 10News that all family members were able to evacuate the burning home safely. Historically, it’s also one of the best days of the year to save money on big-ticket items like electronics and appliances.But with social distancing the norm, it’s hard to imagine shoppers camping out on the sidewalk next to one another this year ahead of Nov. 27. It’s even more difficult to picture stores overflowing with excited shoppers.Retail experts believe Black Friday will still happen in 2020, despite the pandemic. But there’s no disputing the fact that it won’t be a traditional experience.“Being there at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines, the hustle and bustle in the store — that’s probably not going to exist,” says Jane Boyd Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in South Carolina who has done research about Black Friday.Sales will shift further onlineFor years, Black Friday has shifted to online channels, merging with Cyber Monday into a weekend-long event. The pandemic is set to further cement that transition.After months of shelter-in-place orders, consumers have become more comfortable shopping from home. That will likely lead to an increase in online Black Friday purchases this year, says Dora Bock, associate professor of marketing at the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama.But the changes could go a step beyond that. COVID-19 has illuminated failings in the supply chain, and Thomas believes many consumers will opt for contactless curbside pickup options (as opposed to shipping to their home) to guarantee that the items they’re buying online are actually available — and not out of stock.Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean stores will be ghost towns.“They want something normal,” Thomas says of some shoppers. “I do think that will drive people to go in to see the lights, to see the trees — all the stuff that goes with that experience.”Doorbusters could be deepEven though the experience will look different, Black Friday discounts might be particularly relevant this year, especially as millions of Americans have faced unemployment and other financial hardships in 2020.While consumers have largely focused on purchasing essential items during the pandemic, Bock anticipates competitive prices on discretionary products like apparel and jewelry.Consumers might also have an appetite for traditional Black Friday categories, such as computers. Thomas expects these discounts will be appealing, considering how critical laptops have become as Americans work, learn and interact virtually from home.“There’s a large number of consumers that look forward to Black Friday because it provides them a sense of excitement,” Bock says. “People feel good when they get a good deal.”Retailers still have some planning to doThere are a number of unanswered questions about how Black Friday will look. After all, retailers are still figuring out how to market the holiday shopping season.One possibility? Black Friday may become an extended period, rather than a single day of sales, says Michael Brown, a partner in the consumer practice of Kearney, a global strategy and management consultant.“I’m expecting that Black Friday as we have grown to know it cannot exist in a COVID world,” Brown says.“I think we have to really not think about Black Friday and think more about when the launch of the holiday season will begin. I think that has to be pulled up by retailers as early as November 1,” he says.Throughout the holiday season, stores will have to perform a delicate dance. Shopping may become just as much about public health as it is about discounts.Retailers have merchandise to sell, but promoting in-store only specials could be seen as insensitive by shoppers with preexisting medical conditions, Bock points out.“I think it’s really going to be a balancing act for retailers to encourage sales, encourage people to buy, encourage trust and promote spending — but promote it in a way that shows they care for their customers’ well-being,” Bock says.There’s one more wild card, Brown says. What type of Black Friday shopping environment will state and local governments allow? It’s part of the DNA of this league.”He then said changes could come in how that commitment is manifested. The commissioner acknowledged the league has to sit down with the players and discuss for next season.“I would say in terms of the messages you see on the court on our jerseys, this was an extraordinary moment in time, when we began the discussions with the players and what we all lived through this summer,” Silver said.In July, when the league restarted their 2020 season from a so-called bubble in Orlando, “Black Lives Matter” was painted on the court floor. Players, coaches and staff stayed in Orlando this summer and drastically limited contact with the outside world and other people, in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Also this season, players were allowed to put slogans or phrases on their jerseys to highlight causes they support.The league was also the first large sports group to protest playing games in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Instead, many teams and other leagues spent time focused on social justice issues.Blake is a black man who is now recovering at a rehabilitation center after being shot several times in the back by a police officer.So, what can fans expect in the 2021 season?“My sense is there will be some sort of return to normalcy. That those messages will largely be left to be delivered off the floor. And I understand those people who are saying ‘I’m on your side, but I want to watch a basketball game,’” Silver said.As for when the next season will start, Silver says everyone with the league needs a rest, mentally and physically, and they don’t have an exact start date at this time. The intersection of technology and spirituality is coming much faster than many expected.In the 1983 Star Wars film Return of the Jedi, artificially intelligent android C3P0 finds out what it’s like to become the subject of worship.“They think I’m some sort of God,” he said, as fuzzy creatures hover around him chanting in prayer.But the intersection of machines and religion is happening in real life.In Japan, monks at an ancient temple hear sermons from a robot avatar of the Buddhist goddess of mercy. In India, an automaton performs one of Hinduism’s most sacred rituals, and in Germany, a robot gives blessings to thousands of protestants.“You could punch in the language, for example, in which you would request the blessing,” said Teresa Berger, a professor of Catholic theology at the Yale University Divinity School.Some are now asking whether the next step is an artificially intelligent spiritual leader and whether counsel from A.I. could ever replace the guidance of a cleric.“I think that's a really important question that we need to wrestle with just as we're also wrestling with the hypothetical possibility of encountering intelligent life from other planets,” said Jennifer Herdt, stark professor of Christian ethics at Yale University Divinity.The pandemic has forced millions around the world out of their churches, temples, synagogues and mosques into virtual congregations.“We've been recording our sermons. We've been posting them online, Facebook and YouTube and Instagram,” said Hisham Al Qaisi, Imam of the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park, IL. “A lot of other Islamic centers are doing the same, trying to keep the community engaged digitally.”Professor Berger argues that whether virtually or in-person the physicality of being present remains. And rather than being disembodied, the technology actually allows more connectivity in some cases. She found that to be true during a recent church experience where parishioners used the chat feature during a sermon.“In this particular digitally-mediated community, people talked to each other throughout the service much more than we might do in a brick and mortar sanctuary,” said Berger.In recent years, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has suggested the social network could address declining church attendance, offering the same sense of community traditionally found in brick and mortar houses of worship. It's something Herdt says may be challenging.“Is this about creating profit for Facebook or is this about truly ministering to the spiritual needs of people trying to keep those things separate would be very difficult,” she said.Still, just how exactly technology will alter manners of worship will undoubtedly continue to evolve, say experts like Herdt.“I'm sure we're going to see some dramatic transformations in the future.” 3064
