SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) - With their backs to the wall, facing elimination, an unforgiving heat, and trying to stave off fatigue from a rigorous schedule, the Park View Little League all-stars survived to play another game at the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino.Keyed by slugger Jose Mendoza and stellar pitching by Kainoa Baptista, the Green Monsters kept their postseason run alive while ending the Arizona Sunnyside Little League's hopes of advancing.  The squad from Chula Vista defeated Sunnyside 9-5 in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.PVLL, which suffered its first loss of the postseason on Monday, took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning three-run blast to right center by Mendoza.The Southern California champs broke the game open in the third inning.  Down two outs with runners on first and second, Aiden Skinner punched a deep single to right field scoring Jordan Bleisch.The long inning and blistering 108-degree heat seemed to wear down Arizona starting pitcher Cristobal Lorta.  Lorta started struggling with his form allowing Park View to extend their lead 7-0 on two wild pitches with runners on third and an RBI single to Conner Alonzo.Sunnyside's decision to keep Lorta on the mound in the fourth inning backfired when the leadoff batter, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double. Lorta then hit Mendoza and Makai Corpuz with a pitch leading to two more runs later in the inning.Arizona's last-gasp effort in their final turn at-bat shrunk Park View's lead 9-5 on a two-run homer by Jovanni Toledo but PVLL closer Atticus Gates to force a pop fly to left field for the final out.The Green Monsters won't get much time to enjoy their victory.  After playing three consecutive days in triple-digit heat, PVLL will return Wednesday night at 7 p.m. to face either Tri-City Little League of Northern California or Dixie Little League of St. George, Utah, in another elimination matchup.Park View may be favoring a match up against Tri-City.  The Green Monsters defeated the Northern California champs in a 16-8 rout that saw a grand slam and a pair of back-to-back homers from Rodriguez and Mendoza.  The winner of the West Regional advances to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League World Series, which runs Aug. 16-26.10News' Jermaine Ong contributed to this report.-------------------------------------------NOTES  2477

San Diego was one of more than 3,600 locations that held the global Climate Change Walkout. Hundreds of teenagers marched from San Diego High School in Downtown to the San Diego Civic Center, hoping to make an impact, three days before the United Nations Climate Change Summit. It's a fight against time. Time, they say, the planet does not have. "Climate change is the existential threat of our generation," Elea Castiglione said. The sophomore at San Deigo High School organized the walkout with her friends. She and hundreds of students hoped their actions would inspire world leaders to take aggressive steps to combat climate change. Point Loma High School senior, Kisi Apaak performed her spoken-word piece, "Madness," at the San Diego Civic Center rally. Being 17, she said she does not have an income, nor does she have the right to vote. She said spoken-word is her way to show Mother Nature that she cares."This is all I know how to do, is write and talk and get out and take action," Apaak said. Many said they were inspired by Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist, who has now become the face of the movement. Activists here said San Diegans should be more involved, considering our geography."I think that San Diego as a city needs to go carbon neutral, and we also need to be leaders as a coastal city in our protest for nationwide and global change," Castiglione said. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The number of people expressing fear of returning to their home countries when stopped at the U.S. border with Mexico has spiked, according to figures released Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.U.S. border authorities fielded 92,959 "credible fear" claims — the initial step toward asylum — in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 67 percent from 55,584 the previous year. The "credible fear" claims accounted for 18 percent of all people arrested or stopped at the Mexican border in the latest period, up from 13 percent a year earlier.CBP publicly released the numbers for the first time as more migrants, many of them families and children from Mexico and Central America, seek asylum or other forms of humanitarian protection to gain entry to the U.S. The trend was highlighted by a caravan of more than 6,000 migrants, largely from Honduras, that arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, last month, many hoping to seek asylum across the border in San Diego.Commissioner Kevin McAleenan noted that most asylum claims are ultimately unsuccessful in immigration court and he renewed the Trump administration's call for Congress to address "these vulnerabilities in our immigration system." Judges granted asylum in 21 percent of their cases in the 2018 fiscal year."These numbers reflect a dramatic increase in initial fear claims by those encountered on the border, which is straining border security, immigration enforcement and courts, and other federal resources," McAleenan said.CBP didn't say how many people it stopped passed the initial screening, or "credible fear" interview, but historically about three in four clear the hurdle.
