SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The family of Rebecca Zahau said they are filing a new lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff's Office for refusing to provide access to records regarding the sheriff's investigation into her death.The family is also petitioning on the San Diego County Medical Examiner - both current and former - to change her cause of death to homicide or undetermined from suicide.On July 13, 2011, Rebecca Zahau’s nude body was reportedly found hanging from a balcony at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado. Investigators said her hands and feet were bound with red rope. The same red rope was discovered hanging over the balcony.Authorities said Adam Shacknai called 911 to report her death. Shacknai was staying at the mansion that was owned then by his brother Jonah Shacknai, Zahau's boyfriend.Zahau, 32, had been babysitting her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son Max when he suffered serious injuries in a fall down a staircase at the home. The boy died from his injuries five days later.The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Zahau’s death a suicide. Authorities have suggested she took her own life out of remorse and sorrow over the boy’s injuries.The Zahau family rejected the suicide conclusion, and for many years, they have believed she was murdered by Adam Shacknai. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The leader of a San Diego motorcycle gang pleaded guilty Tuesday to participating in a scheme to seal dozens of Jeep Wranglers in San Diego County. Jimmy Josue Martinez, a leader of the Hooligans motorcycle gang, pleaded guilty Tuesday, admitting to participating in the scheme. According to court records, the gang is responsible for the theft of more than 150 of the vehicles since 2014, totaling about .5 million. Records show that the Hooligans used high-tech methods to disable security systems and steal the Jeeps before taking them to Tijuana to be sold or stripped for parts. Martinez and members of his crew would obtain the vehicle identification number in advance before getting secret key codes which allowed them to create a duplicate key for a particular Jeep. “The joy ride is over for Mr. Martinez,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “These thefts were audacious and sophisticated and created hassle and heartache for scores of Jeep owners. I congratulate prosecutors Andrew Galvin and Joseph S. Green, the FBI and members of the Regional Auto Theft Task Force for putting together a strong case against a gang that, unfortunately, has lived up to its name.”Along with Martinez, eight other members of the gang were charged in a grand jury indictment in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County Board of Supervisors voted to temporarily ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco product in unincorporated areas of San Diego.Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Dianne Jacob, first proposed the ordinance in October in response to the nationwide epidemic of serious lung injuries linked to "electronic smoking devices, the alarming uptake in e-cigarette use by teens, and the terrible toll of combustible tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, little cigars) on San Diegans."There have been a reported 43 cases of vaping-related lung injuries in San Diego County. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.As stewards of public health, the County has a responsibility to act in the interest of the public health. The ordinances the Board passed today to restrict the sale and use of smoking and vaping products in unincorporated areas of the County will save lives," said Supervisor Fletcher after the ordinances passed. The proposed policy aims to curb secondhand smoke exposure for restaurant patrons, as well as the service industry employees, by restricting smoking at outdoor areas in unincorporated parts of the county.San Diego is now among the several dozen counties across the state that have passed ordinances prohibiting or restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products.A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county's second case of measles this year has been reported, health officials announced Tuesday.The person was fully immunized but came into contact with an 11-month-old San Diego resident who contracted the disease after a recent trip to the Philippines.The second patient may have also exposed the public to measles at two locations, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services said. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A distinctive red rash also appears one to four days after symptoms appear, starting on the face and head then spreads downward and outward. A person is considered contagious four days before the rash appears.Anyone with symptoms is asked to call their doctor’s office before visiting directly.Complications from measles are more common in children younger than 5 and adults 20 years and older, though the risk is higher with children. Complications include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. In severe instances, death can occur.Since there is no treatment for measles, the best course is generally bed rest, fluids, and fever-control medication.
