The star of the Netflix documentary "Tiger King" Joe Exotic sued the United States Justice Department Wednesday because they rejected his request for a presidential pardon.According to court documents obtained by CBS11 and Courthouse News, lawyers for Exotic, whose real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, argued that the rejection isn't valid because Acting Pardon Attorney Rosalind Sargent-Burns didn't give his official request to President Donald Trump himself.According to the six-page complaint filed in federal court in Fort Worth, Exotic's legal team named Sargent-Burns because she allegedly never gave President Trump a formal recommendation, which according to the lawsuit, she's required to do.Currently, Maldonado-Passage is serving a 22-year prison sentence in Fort Worth after he was found guilty in April 2019 for animal cruelty and trying to hire someone to murder Carole Baskin, who's a big-cat rights activist.The complaint also names Donald Trump Jr. as a supporter, CBS11 reported. 1006

The U.S. Department of Justice is at polling locations in 19 states to ensure federal voting rights laws are being followed. There are also thousands of people with civil rights and voting advocacy groups watching the polls. One place they're concerned about voter suppression is Dodge City, Kansas.Jose Vargas, Marilyn Horsch and Rita Schweitz all traveled to Dodge City to help voters.  "We were really angry and thought maybe there’s something we can do to help," says Schweitz, who flew in from Denver, CO.  They’re all here because they’re angry that the town’s polling place was moved, without much notice. They are calling it voter suppression.“Designed to frustrate the voter, to make people give up,” says Horsch.For years, the town’s polling place was right in the middle of Dodge City. But this year, the county election officer, citing construction projects, decided to move to a different location that is four miles away. The new location is outside city limits, and there’s no access to sidewalks and it’s cut off from public transportation.The ACLU sued Dodge City, asking a judge to force the county to open a second polling location for the town's 27,000 residents. A judge denied the request, so the ACLU emailed election officer Debbie Cox, asking for help publicizing a voter help line.The Wichita Eagle reported that Cox then sent that on to the Secretary of State's office, adding “LOL” to the email.So, volunteers like Jose Vargas, Marilyn Horsch and Rita Schweitz are offering bus rides from the old location to the new one to ensure voters get to the poll. The world's No. 1 tennis player’s offer to upgrade a tennis center in Boca Raton was rejected by the public park system’s leadership Monday, and many in the community call it a win. The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District had been looking to upgrade Patch Reef Park since 2014.Tennis star Rafael Nadal wanted a tennis academy in his name, which would have included restaurants, dorms, indoor and outdoors courts.The district has been looking at renovating the tennis center at Patch Reef Park since 2014. Last summer, Rafael Nadal had reached out and offered to help build a new indoor facility. "It just wasn’t right. It was wrong. We’re happy to have Nadal here but build elsewhere. This place belongs to the people of Boca Raton," said Dina La Voe, an advocate of Patch Reef Park. Instead, the park will make a request for proposals and have more public input. It’s possible for Nadal to win a bid that way.At the beginning of the month, renderings of the facility were shared and the facility was called the “Rafael Nadal Academy.” The renderings showed indoor and outdoor tennis courts, dormitories, and restaurants.District executive director Arthur Koski said the district was not going to agree to what the Nadal group had offered. “We advised the Nadal group that an academy would not be something we would consider.” “Right now, we think the best first step is a step backwards,” said Koski.Some people in Boca Raton were not happy to hear about the proposed Nadal Academy. “It looks to me like they are tearing everything out of here,” said Dan Bianco. Koski said he would like to see different ideas about an indoor tennis center that would fit everyone's needs.  1745

The summer season begins in Del Mar in less than a month, bringing with it a wealth of exciting events, but also a large influx of crowds and traffic.As one of the smallest cities in San Diego County, Del Mar has just about 4,000 people. But on any given day in the summer, more than 100,000 people could come to town. Within four months, the city hosts the San Diego County Fair, the Del Mar Horse Racing season, the Kaaboo concert weekend and also some of the busiest beaches in the area."That's part of the city's story, we're used to it," says long-time Del Mar resident Bettina Experton. "The Council knows how to handle it."The Del Mar City Council will meet Monday, May 7th, to discuss their plans for the 2018 season.They'll add ,000 to the budget for Sheriff's Department overtime. That helps put extra deputies on patrol to watch for petty theft, car break-ins and other small crimes near the beach. The city also adds lifeguards on busy weekends.To help defray the costs, parking is strictly enforced throughout the summer, with another officer added to patrol the meters. People have to pay for parking seven days a week in some areas, with meters going until 10 pm on weekends."We provide services for close to 5 million people a year," says Vice Mayor Dave Druker. "Somehow we need to pay a little bit of those services through our parking enforcement.
