Trump has seized on statistics about illegal border crossings that have grown on her watch after reaching a record low early in his term. More than 50,000 people were detained at the southwest border in October — the highest monthly total since 2014 and up dramatically from 11,000 in April 2017."It's a tough job. You're someone who has to get good numbers on border crossing. He's always looking for that and it's tough," Bennett said.But illegal border crossings could also be tied to the seasons — some experts argue that more migrants make the dangerous journey through the desert when it's not as hot. And Nielsen has largely carried out the president's wishes, including pushing for funding for his border wall and defending the administration's now-abandoned practice of separating children from parents. She also moved to abandon long-standing regulations that dictate how long children are allowed to be held in immigration detention, and was working to find space to detain all families who cross the border. She limited what public benefits migrants can receive, and last week put regulations in place that circumvent immigration law to deny asylum to anyone caught crossing the border illegally. Nearly everything has been challenged or watered down by the courts."I don't think they're going to get the magic person," said Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank that studies migration issues. "Nielsen had been fairly hard-line implementing what Trump wants, but she's not willing to skirt around the law to do it."And it's not just about policy.Trump has also told allies that he never fully trusted Nielsen, whom he associated with President George W. Bush, a longtime foe. And he has told those close to him that he feels, at times, that she has stronger loyalty to her mentor — chief of staff John Kelly — than to the president. VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. WASHINGTON — An Associated Press investigation has identified at least six sexual misconduct allegations involving senior FBI officials over the past five years, including two new claims brought this week by women who say they were sexually assaulted by ranking agents.The AP found several of the accused FBI officials were quietly transferred or retired, keeping their full pensions even when probes substantiated the sexual misconduct claims.Beyond that, federal law enforcement officials are afforded anonymity even after the disciplinary process runs its course, allowing them to land on their feet in the private sector or even remain in law enforcement.According to the AP's report, one FBI assistant director retired after he was accused of groping a female subordinate in a stairwell. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - Prosecutors announced Friday they will seek a second trial against ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, who was convicted of forcible rape and misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and lewd conduct earlier this week. Following about a week of deliberations, a Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges, including rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. Jurors indicated that they were leaning toward guilty verdicts on each count, but were unable to reach a consensus, leading San Diego Superior Court Judge Blaine Bowman to declare a mistrial as to those counts Tuesday morning, and dismiss the jury. Prosecutors stated they will go forward with trying Winslow a second time. A judge set the trial date for Sept. 30 and denied bail, saying Winslow was a danger to the community.Winslow was convicted of last May's rape of a 58-year-old homeless woman -- Jane Doe 2 -- exposing himself to Jane Doe 3, who was gardening in her front yard in Cardiff last May, and touching himself in front of a 77-year-old woman -- Jane Doe 5 -- at a Carlsbad gym in February.
