SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people are dead after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria linked to black tar heroin use in San Diego.County health officials said nine people who injected black tar heroin were admitted to county hospitals between Oct. 2 and Nov. 24 with a bacterial infection called myonecrosis, which is a severe soft tissue infection that destroys muscle. Of those victims, seven have died. People who inject illicit narcotics like black tar heroin are at a higher risk of developing both infections, the county says. Additional cases may be reported.Symptoms of severe myonecrosis can include severe pain; pale skin that quickly turns gray, dark red, purple, or black; foul-smelling blisters; fever; and increased heart rate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State Students created public service announcements, as part of a competition, to encourage their peers to take precautions and stop the spread of the coronavirus. Thursday the university announced two more students tested positive for the virus, making the total four since move in.The County of San Diego and SDSU will use the PSAs online as part of a new ad campaign, according to the county.The university came to the county amid a spike in cases among young people age 20-29. San Diego County reported 25% of positive cases belong to that age group."We're asking people of your generation of your age group to do the right thing," Dr. Hala Madanat, Director of the School of Public Health at SDSU, said. She led the charge to create the competition."I really was hoping that we would hear from the age group where we were struggling to get adherence to the guidelines and be the ones to encourage their peers," to follow the guidelines she said.One of the three winners, Senior JakeBryan Bonifacio, said he felt an obligation to use his skills to help. "It [the pandemic] is very concerning so that’s why I felt compelled to share this opportunity, share my video."Bonifacio is a Marketing major and already had the tools to create a video. He said he used his own camera and editing software.He said it was most important to create an impact using levity and positivity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sara Jacobs, winner of the race to replace the retiring Susan Davis in California's 53rd district, is getting ready to begin the transition to Congress."Kind of feels like college. I’ll be going to freshman orientation, picking my office room, staffing my office. Talking with congresswoman Davis, to others about a transition. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans.
