DENVER, Colo. — Voters in Denver, Colorado, overwhelmingly voted to pass Ballot Measure 2J to lift the cities more than 30 years old ban on pit bulls.Ballot Measure 2J passed with 64.5% voting to lift the ban and 35.5% voting to keep the ban in place.Passing the measure will allow the city to grant a provisional permit to pit bull owners as long as the owner microchips the animal and complies with additional requirements set by Denver Animal Protection.Denver Council member Christopher Herndon led the charge, proposing the idea to lift the pit bull ban in January.Denver City Council voted 7-4 to repeal the ban in February, which would have replaced the law with what could be best described as a “probation” for pit bulls. However, Mayor Hancock vetoed the ordinance just days later, saying in a letter he could not support the legislation because it did not, "fully addresses the very real risk to a severe injury that can result from attacks from these particular dog breeds, especially should they happen to a child."The law banning pit bulls was put in place in 1989 after 20 people had been attacked by pit bulls in the previous five years.One was a 3-year old who died from the attack in 1986. Hancock argued in his letter to the council that less than 20% of all pets in Denver are currently licensed, which "raises significant questions about the effectiveness of this proposed new system."Proponents said breed-specific bans do not work and enforcing the ban has cost the City of Denver more than .8 million.Aurora, Lone Tree, Louisville, and Commerce City still have bans on pit bulls, though Castle Rock repealed their ban in 2018. Data released on Monday by the FBI shows a drop in violent crime in the US in 2019, continuing a trend in recent years.The FBI said that violent crimes in the US dropped 1 percent in 2019 compared to 2018. The improvement was the third straight year of a declining violent crime rate in the US.The FBI added that property crimes in the US dropped 4.5 percent from 2018.The amount of violent crime in the US has dropped significantly so far in the 21st century, per FBI data. In 2000, there were 506 reported instances of violent crimes per 100,000 people. (KGTV) - MLB Hall of Famer, Trevor Hoffman, joined joint developers, Zephyr Partners and The Robert Green Company Monday in supporting an initiative that would give San Diegans access to a bluff-top site that has been closed to the public for a century.The plan is to transform a nearly 17-acre site at 3350 Camino Del Mar into a luxury resort with public access to the beach down below."To be able to actually come here and enjoy it, have a glass of wine at one of the restaurants or walking on one of the trails, I'm really looking forward to it," said Del Mar resident of 50 years, KC Vafiadis. The two developers want to create a luxury resort called "Marisol" which would include a hotel with 65 rooms, 31 villas, dining options, gardens, cocktail lounge, spa and access to the beach down below. The plan is a smaller version of the original proposal, which was met with backlash by residents of Solana Beach and Del Mar. They worried it would obstruct ocean views and increase traffic in the area, so the developers downsized the project by 40-percent.The new plan is an alternative to a proposal that was already approved, which would create private, gated estates.The developers now hope to gather enough signatures for a citizen's initiative to put the plan on the ballot next March.
