Three Gulf Coast states were placed under a Tropical Storm Warning on Friday as Tropical Storm Cristobal is setting its sights for the US late Sunday. According the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal is a minimal tropical storm along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with top winds of 40 MPH. The slow-moving storm has dumped heavy rain over the Yucatan Peninsula this week.After stalling out over the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center projects the storm will move across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend before coming ashore late Sunday. Parts of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast are under a Tropical Storm Watch.The Atlantic Hurricane Season is off to its most active start in recorded history. Cristobal is already the third named storm of 2020. No other hurricane season has had three named storms this early in the year. Most major projections are calling for an abnormally busy hurricane season in the Atlantic. The storm is forecast to remain a tropical storm through landfall, although the National Hurricane Center expects Cristobal to strengthen into a strong tropical storm by landfall. Among the locations under a Tropical Storm Warning is New Orleans, which is one of the most susceptible cities to flooding in the US. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm. Along with heavy rains and gusty winds, tornadoes and storm surge are also possible with Cristobal. 1453

The Texas Department of State Health Services and Fort Bend County Health and Human Services are reporting the first positive test result for coronavirus in Texas outside of the passengers returned from Wuhan City or the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The DSHS says the patient is a resident of Fort Bend County and recently returned from travel abroad. The patient is currently isolated in the hospital. The test was performed at the public health lab in Houston and will be confirmed by testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. DSHS is supporting Fort Bend County in identifying any close contacts of the patient while he was sick so thaty can be isolated and monitored for symptoms and quickly tested, if needed. “Having a COVID-19 case in Texas is a significant development in this outbreak, but it doesn’t change the fact that the immediate risk to most Texans is low,” said Dr. John Hellerstedt, DSHS commissioner. “This travel-related case reinforces the fact that we should all be taking basic hygiene steps that are extremely effective in limiting limit the spread of COVID-19 and all respiratory illnesses.”DSHS says a travel-related case in Texas does not indicate spread within the state.Governor Abbott and the DSHS will hold a press conference Thursday on the state's testing capabilities for COVID-19. 1345

The parents of Otto Warmbier, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, will have dinner at the White House on Saturday night with President Donald Trump and Richard Grenell, the US ambassador to Germany, according to two administration sources.Otto Warmbier was an American college student who was held prisoner for 17 months by Pyongyang and died shortly after he was returned home in a comatose state in 2017.It's unclear how Saturday's dinner was planned and whether anyone else will join them. But this dinner was planned before John Bolton was fired earlier this week.Grenell met with the Warmbiers when they visited Germany in August. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees are one group who are expected to work without pay during the shutdown. Now, some of them have been choosing not to come in by calling in sick. Brian Turner, a TSA agent, and his wife are new parents. Thanks to the government shutdown, Turner has no idea when he'll get his next paycheck, and the couple is worried they could run out of money by the end of the month. “We are a paycheck to paycheck family, in the reality of it,” Turner says. “So, we do depend on that constant income.” Turner is considered an essential employee, so he still has to work even though he's not currently getting paid.“When you don't have a paycheck coming in and you don't have a guaranteed source of income when you thought you did, it's disheartening and it kind of makes you feel a little panicked,” he says.For some TSA agents, the shutdown is taking its toll. A growing number of agents are now calling out sick to work other places or to find new jobs. Safety and long lines could become another concern if the shutdown continues. “Poor morale or other issues that could affect the TSA because of the shutdown and not getting paid, that could have some sort of intangible effect on how well they're doing their jobs,” says David Inserra, with the Heritage Foundation. “People are people, and if you're not getting paid, if you're upset, you're probably not going to be doing as good of a job as you otherwise would.” For now, Turner is still going to work.
