ALGIERS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in Algiers on Monday afternoon on a three-day official visit to Algeria.     During an informal meeting at the airport with Abdelaziz Ziari, Speaker of the Algerian National Assembly, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the progress of bilateral relations in recent years, saying he felt especially delighted to visit Algeria at the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.     "The purpose of my visit is to further promote the friendship between the two peoples, expand the bilateral cooperation with mutual benefit and strengthen our strategic and cooperative ties to a higher level," Wu told Ziari. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory message to a UN meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to be held Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.     Wen extended warm congratulations to the opening of the meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on behalf of the Chinese government.     The Palestinian issue is the core of the Mideast problem. China staunchly supports the restoration of the legal rights of the Palestinian people as well as the Mideast peace process, the message said.     China hopes that Palestine and Israel would stick to the path of peaceful negotiations on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "Land for Peace" principle to establish an independent Palestinian state at an early date, so as to realize peaceful coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian states, it said.     To resolve the Palestinian issue at an early date is the aspiration of the people in the Mideast as well as the common expectation of the international community, it said.     As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to support the United Nations in playing an important role in solving the Mideast problem and pushing forward the settlement of the Palestinian issue, said the message.     The Chinese government will also work with the international community to make unremitting contributions to peace, stability and development in the Mideast, it added.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vice-Premier Li Keqiang visited the 2008 China Beijing International Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition on Monday.     Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, spoke highly of the achievements made by the country and the national capital in terms of energy efficiency and pollution reduction.     LI said China has large potential in the resources and environmental sector and it should focus on energy efficiency and environmental protection. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) issued a Chair's Statement here on Saturday, agreeing to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The statement said the leaders held extensive and in-depth discussions on issues of realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the sustainable development targets agreed in Johannesburg, strengthening energy security cooperation, jointly addressing the challenge of climate change, and environmental protection, including water resources, forests and air, and improving social cohesion under the framework of sustainable development.     Leaders stressed the importance of mid-term review of the MDGs, and underscored the need for ASEM members to further deepen international development cooperation to meet the IADGs, particularly the MDGs, in a timely manner.     Leaders expressed their support for strengthened international cooperation on climate change that could help assess impacts and vulnerabilities, build adaptive capacities, and support adaptation actions.     Leaders also emphasized the need for the sustainable management of forest and ocean as well as other territorial, coastal and marine ecosystems.     Leaders stressed the need to focus on development needs and environmental sustainability in the energy sector. They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao offered six proposals to promote the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relationship in a speech to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" here on Wednesday.     Hu said the mainland is willing to discuss with Taiwan proper and reasonable arrangements for Taiwan's participation in international organizations, as long as this does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".     Although the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have been split since 1949 by a civil war, the political confrontation between them did not change the fact that they belonged to one China, he said.     "Once the two sides reach a common understanding and accordant stance on the principle of one China, the foundation of political mutual trust will be laid and anything can be talked about between the two sides," he said. "Anything that is conducive to peaceful development across the Straits, we will greatly promote. Anything that harms it, we will firmly oppose."     Hu proposed that the two sides end hostility and reach peaceful agreements under the one China principle.     The two sides can start discussion about political relations under the special condition before reunification in a pragmatic manner, he said.     He also suggested the two sides to step up contacts and exchanges on military issues "at an appropriate time" and talk about a military security mechanism of mutual trust, in a bid to stabilize cross-Straits relations and ease concerns about military security.
