BEIJING, August 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Medtronic Inc. is giving Yale University a 2.5 million U.S. dollar grant to review the safety and effectiveness of its controversial spine treatment called Infuse Bone Graft, according to The Wall Street Journals Thursday.Under terms of the pact, the company will release to Yale and eventually the public what participants described as an unprecedented amount of clinical trial and other data. The university will select two research teams from other organizations to perform separate analyses of the data.The announcement comes in the wake of a paper in June in the Spine Journal. The paper revealed that several clinical studies of Infuse, conducted by surgeons with strong economic ties to Medtronic, failed to report serious complications that arose in the trials. The critical paper also found that many of the studies were designed in ways in favor of Infuse over a treatment given to a control group.Medtronic disputes some of the findings and is conducting an internal investigation of the matter.Infuse accounts for about 700 million dollars in annual sales for Medtronic. The product is under investigation by the Senate Finance Committee over the role payments to physicians who may have played how studies were reported.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new icebreaker for use during an upcoming 2013 polar expedition, a senior oceanic official said on Tuesday.Both the new icebreaker and Xuelong ("Snow Dragon"), an icebreaker that operated in Antarctica, will form an Arctic-Antarctic maritime research team."China will have at least two icebreakers concurrently operating at both the north and south poles," Chen Lianzeng, deputy director of the State Oceanic Administration, told a national conference on polar research, which has been the first since 1984 when the country started expeditions in polar regions.The new icebreaker will boast facilities that will allow it to research the oceanic environment, integrate data for real-time oceanic monitoring, deploy and retrieve detectors and conduct aerial studies using helicopters, Chen said.The two icebreakers will conduct expeditions in polar regions for more than 200 days annually, he said.Fixed-wing aircraft will also be added to the expedition team before 2015, allowing researchers to be transported between China's Zhongshan and Kunlun research stations and Antarctica's Grove Mountains.The Kunlun station went into operation in early 2009 as the first Chinese research station on Antarctica's inland. WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The annual number of new HIV infections in the United States was relatively stable at approximately 50,000 new infections each year between 2006 and 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's first multi- year estimates from its national HIV incidence surveillance find.However, HIV infections increased among young men who have sex with men (MSM) between 2006 and 2009, driven by alarming increases among young, black MSM -- the only subpopulation to experience a sustained increase during the period.According to the new estimates, there were 48,600 new HIV infections in the United States in 2006, 56,000 in 2007, 47,800 in 2008 and 48,100 in 2009. The multi-year incidence estimates allow for a reliable examination of trends over time. They reveal no statistically significant change in HIV incidence overall from 2006 to 2009, with an average of 50,000 for the four-year period. In 2009, the largest number of new infections was among white MSM (11,400), followed closely by black MSM (10,800). Hispanic MSM (6, 000) and black women (5,400) were also heavily affected.The new estimates were published Wednesday in the on-line scientific journal PLoS ONE."More than 30 years into the HIV epidemic, about 50,000 people in this country still become infected each year. Not only do men who have sex with men continue to account for most new infections, young gay and bisexual men are the only group in which infections are increasing, and this increase is particularly concerning among young African American MSM," said CDC Director Thomas Frieden.
