JINAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough that could lead to more effective treatments for leprosy.A team from Shandong Provincial Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in east China has identified two new risk variants near IL23R and RAB 32 genes that are responsible for the disease, according to a report published online Monday in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.Knowing that the two gene variants influence susceptibility to leprosy could allow doctors to diagnose the disease in sufferers earlier in its outset, as well as to develop new treatments. A genetic database could now be built up to predict those people particularly susceptible to leprosy, said Zhang Furen, the leader of the research team.The study involved more than 10,000 samples being taken from leprosy sufferers and healthy test subjects and analysed.Leprosy is a chronic nerve-killing disease that leads to problems with patients' skin, feet, hands, legs and eyes. More than 200,000 newly-contracted leprosy cases are reported worldwide every year, and China has around one tenth of the world's sufferers. 

TOKYO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Tuesday that Japan will seek to take a less inward- looking stance when it comes to diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region.Specifically he said that Japan will look to enhance diplomatic ties with China based on mutually beneficial goals."With China, this year marks the 40th anniversary of normalizing diplomatic ties. We will aim to deepen the mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests," Gemba said Tuesday in his first foreign policy speech in parliament.He went on to say that Japan plans to proactively make " concrete efforts" to strengthen its ties with China and establish more "open and multilayered networks" in the best interests of both countries.

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday exchanged congratulatory messages with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias on the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.In his message, Hu said bilateral ties between China and Cyprus have developed smoothly since they were established.Political mutual trust has continued to deepen and the two countries understand each other and support each other's major concerns, he said, adding bilateral pragmatic cooperation has also been expanding continuously.China highly values its relations with Cyprus and is ready to work with the country to deepen their traditional friendship, strengthen exchanges at various levels and enhance cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, culture and tourism, the Chinese president said.Hu said China is also willing to maintain communication and coordination with Cyprus on international and regional affairs.Christofias, for his part, said China and Cyprus have carried out close exchanges and cooperation, adding bilateral ties have been further strengthened through frequent high-level exchanges in recent years.Cyprus believes the two countries are on friendly terms and understand each other, which is in line with the common interests of both China and Cyprus, Christofias said.The president said Cyprus also believes bilateral relations would make further progress in the future.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also exchanged congratulatory messages on Wednesday with his Cypriot counterpart Erato Kozakou Marcoullis.
