MOHE, Heilongjiang, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Some 1.318 million tonnes of crude oil had flowed through an oil pipeline from Russia's far-east to China by Jan. 31, a month after the pipeline began operating, an officer of the Chinese operator of the pipeline said. The pipeline, which originates in the Russian town of Skovorodino in the far-eastern Amur region, enters China at Mohe and terminates at Daqing City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The facility withstood the test of the severe coldness since it was put into operation on Jan. 1 and no production accident has been reported so far, said Gou Hanghai, director of the Mohe administration station of the pipeline. The pipeline remains a daily oil delivering capacity of 42,000 tonnes, he saidThe 1,000-km-long pipeline will transport 15 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia to China per year from 2011 to 2030, according to an agreement signed between the two countries. Some 72 kilometers of the pipeline is in Russia and 927 kilometers of it is in China.

WASHINGTON, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Early initiation of antiretroviral treatment in people infected with HIV prevents them from transmitting the virus to their partners, according to findings released Thursday from a large-scale international clinical study. The study, known as HPTN 052, was designed to evaluate whether antiretroviral drugs can prevent sexual transmission of HIV infection among couples in which one partner is HIV-infected and the other is not. The results are the first of their kind from a major randomized clinical trial.Led by Myron Cohen, of the University of North Carolina, the research found that treating HIV-infected individuals with antiretroviral therapy (ART) when their immune systems are still relatively healthy led to a 96 percent reduction in HIV transmission to their partners. This critical new finding convincingly demonstrates that early treatment of infected individuals can have a major impact on the spread of the epidemic.Study investigators enrolled 1,763 couples who were not eligible for ART by WHO standards in nine countries around the world. All couples were at least 18 years of age. The vast majority of the couples (97 percent) were heterosexual, which precludes any definitive conclusions about effectiveness in men who have sex with men.Couples were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. In the first group, the HIV-infected partner initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) as soon as the couple enrolled in the study (the immediate treatment group); in the second group, infected partners did not begin ART until their CD4+ counts fell to between 200 and 250 cells/mm3 or they developed an AIDS-related illness (the delayed treatment group). Couples in both groups received HIV primary care, counseling and condoms. Results of this research study, which was scheduled to conclude in 2015, are being released early, after the independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) determined that the benefits of early treatment were clear.

LOS ANGELES, April 3 (Xinhua) -- People with lower levels of vitamin D are more likely to have stiffer arteries and an inability of blood vessels to relax, U.S. researchers have found. This finding also applies to people who are in general good health, according to researchers from the Emory University School of Medicine. The researchers presented their findings on Sunday at the annual American College of Cardiology meeting in New Orleans.Impaired vascular health in correlation with lower vitamin D levels contributes to high blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, the researchers say.The study involved 554 participants, with the average age of 47 and generally healthy. The average level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (a stable form of the vitamin reflecting diet as well as production in the skin) in participants' blood was 31.8 nanograms per milliliter. In this group, 14 percent had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels considered deficient, or less than 20 nanograms per milliliter, and 33 percent had levels considered insufficient, less than 30 nanograms per milliliter. The researchers monitored the ability of participants' blood vessels to relax by inflating and then removing a blood pressure cuff on their arms. To allow blood to flow back into the arm, blood vessels must relax and enlarge -- a change that can be measured by ultrasound. The researchers also made other measurements of smaller blood vessels and examined the resistance to blood flow imposed by the arteries.

CONAKRY, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Guinean President Alpha Conde said Monday while meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that Guinea hopes to expand cooperation with China in a wide range of fields.Conde said Guinea values the traditional friendship with China, is grateful to China's assistance to Guinea under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and appreciates the contribution China has made to the peace and common development of the world as well as the recovery of world economy from the global financial crisis. He reiterated Guinea's adherence to the one-China policy, and said the country is willing to learn from China's development experiences. Guinea hopes to further expand cooperation with China in such fields as water resources management, electricity generation and infrastructure building, said the president, who also welcomed Chinese companies to invest in Guinea. Also in a meeting with the visiting Chinese foreign minister, Guinea's Prime Minister Mohamed Said Fofana thanked China for sending medical teams to Guinea, helping Guinea train personnel in various sectors and constructing a series of aid projects in the African country. Fofana said Guinea expects to carry out all- around and mutually beneficial cooperation with China. For his part, the Chinese foreign minister said China-Guinea relations have been enjoying healthy and stable development throughout a period of over half a century, featuring political equality, mutual benefit and friendship.Yang said China has always been supporting Guinea's strive for peace and stability, and offering assistance for Guinea in social and economic development. He said enterprises from both sides have been carrying out cooperation in such realms as telecommunications, infrastructure building, among others.Yang said Guinea has successfully completed a political transition, and under the leadership of President Conde, the country will surely make more achievements in social and economic development. He noted that China is willing to make joint efforts with Guinea to consolidate traditional friendship, expand cooperation and push bilateral relations to a new height. The visiting foreign minister, who arrived here on Sunday, also met with his Guinean counterpart Edouard Niankoye Lama on Monday on bilateral cooperation and a number of other issues.

LOS ANGELES, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Those who take a nap are more likely to have lower levels of blood pressure despite stress, said a new study in the latest issue of International Journal of Behavioral Medicine available on Wednesday. In the study, researchers at Sarah Conklin of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania examined 85 healthy university students, who were divided into two groups, with one group taking an hour- long nap during the day, and the other group having no time to sleep. Both groups were given a mental stress test. The study found that participants in both groups experienced increase in blood pressure and pulse rates when they took the stress test, but the average blood pressure of those who slept for at least 45 minutes was significantly lower after the stress test than it was for those who did not sleep. The researchers drew the conclusion that a daytime nap of at least 45 minutes may help stressed-out people lower their blood pressure and protect their heart."Our findings suggest that daytime sleep may offer cardiovascular benefit by accelerating cardiovascular recovery following mental stressors," the researchers said in the study."Further research is needed to explore the mechanism by which daytime sleep is linked with cardiovascular health and to evaluate daytime sleep as a recuperative and protective practice, especially for individuals with known cardiovascular disease risk and those with suboptimal sleep quality," they added.Sleep deficiency is common in the United States, posing a long- term health threat. On average, Americans get nearly two hours less sleep a night than they did 50 years ago, according to background information provided by the journal.
