CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man who allegedly stabbed and seriously injured another man with a screwdriver during a San Ysidro street robbery pleaded not guilty Friday to attempted murder, robbery and vandalism charges.Eduardo Hernandez Oliveros, 22, is accused of robbing the victim just before 7:30 a.m. Sept. 17 in the 600 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard.Police said the victim was using his cell phone when Oliveros confronted him on the street and asked to use the phone. Before the victim could react, Oliveros allegedly snatched the phone out of his hand and took off.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim alleged the victim chased Oliveros down and a "physical struggle" ensued, culminating in the defendant stabbing the victim in the face and neck with a screwdriver.Bystanders called police, who responded and arrested Oliveros, who faces more than 25 years in state prison if convicted of all charges, according to the prosecutor.The victim, whose name was not released, was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department, which alleged that Oliveros "admitted he was trying to kill the victim."Oliveros has a prior attempted murder conviction for stomping on his girlfriend's head, stabbing her in the leg and telling her he was going to kill her, according to Shim. He was found guilty in 2015 in Riverside County, according to the criminal complaint.Bail was set at million for Oliveros, who is due back in court Oct. 14 for a readiness conference. 1503

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video shows a frantic rescue effort in Chula Vista after a car went off Interstate 5, leaving two adults and a child trapped upside down. “We got a kid! We got a kid! Oh my god,” said Jay Corona, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help when they spotted the overturned car near H Street around 10 a.m. Corona and his girlfriend Priscilla Valdovinos were on their way to a salon when they came across the wreck. “I was shocked, I was nervous, I was scared, all that,” said Valdovinos. "Somebody's in there. Somebody's in there."Smoke was rushing from the muffler so furiously Corona thought the car would explode. He saw the family hanging upside down by their seat belts and was able to save a mother and her young child. However, the front door of the sedan was stuck. “It wouldn't open. Because it was really jammed. I just kept pulling and pulling, and then the next thing I know I yanked it open,” Corona said. “I got it open and [the grandma] was in the front seat like, traumatized. With the help of other drivers, Corona escorted the grandmother back to the roadway. She was shaken up, but not seriously injured. Corona, who works as a security guard at a North Park bar, says his training kicked in. “I was very proud. He makes me proud every day! I fall in love with him every day, but today I told him, this is one that I'll remember,” said Valdovinos. The couple was struck by how many other people stopped to help. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The South Bay community is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved Olympian High School teacher.Vanessa Sholty’s family said she suffered a stroke on Friday and passed away Sunday. She was only 39-years-old.Sholty’s sister, Rebecca Webb, spoke about her love for teaching dance and her love for children. “She’s been dancing for her whole life. She loves to dance and teach the kids to dance,” Webb said.Sholty taught dance and physical education at Olympian High School in Chula Vista. With distance learning and COVID-19 protocols, Sholty — like the other teachers — made adjustments.“She set up her whole living room like a dance studio,” Webb said.Sholty leaves behind her husband and two young children. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with costs.“We were not prepared for any of this,” Sholty said. “I walk into her house and I see all her school stuff still there because she had she was working that day… it's just some major shock for us all.”Webb said support from the community, including messages from students and fellow staff members, is helping them keep strong.“Her passing has deeply affected us all,” said a post on the Olympian High School Facebook page. “We have grief counselors available for anyone wishing to talk about this tragic event. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A survey of Chula Vista residents and businesses show the economic toll the pandemic has taken on the city.The results of the July survey were recently released. It polled 576 businesses and nearly 800 residents.It showed nearly all businesses have seen a decline in revenue during the pandemic. As of the end of July, only half of businesses surveyed were fully open. About half of the businesses in the report also decrease their workforce. It also said 60 percent of unemployment in the city is due to COVID-19 and many have struggled to find new job opportunities.60 percent of businesses surveyed said given current projections, they anticipate closing within six months.Alita Fernandez is the director of Play City in Eastlake, an indoor playground for children. She said her workplace has been closed since March.“On the business side, it’s been very tough, but also on the personal side,” Fernandez said.She is not surprised by the grim numbers reported in the survey.“There are expenses that need to be covered… money comes in, the same thing goes out,” Fernandez said. Except now, there is no money coming in for many businesses.Fernandez and 15 other employees have lost their jobs until the planned reopening in January 2021.
