HAIKOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China is bracing for a strong tropical storm named "Mindelle", which is expected to skim the southernmost island province of Hainan between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.At 8 a.m. Monday, a tropical low pressure system across the South China Sea intensified into the fifth tropical storm of the year, after being upgraded to a strong tropical storm eight hours later.The storm, by the name of "Mindellu", which means dandelion in Korean, is expected to approach the Beibu Gulf off the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after skipping Hainan, the Hainan provincial meteorological bureau said.Local authorities in Hainan have halted railway, shipping services and tourism programs and called fishing boats to return to ports as they braced for the storm.Both cargo and passenger shipping services were halted at 5 p.m., according to the ban issued by the provincial maritime affairs bureau.Also, passenger and cargo train services through Qiongzhou strait between the mainland and Hainan were halted at 5 p.m.Meanwhile, more than 26,000 fishing boats have returned to their ports.Tourism activities, such as diving and water-motorbike-driving in Sanya, the famous tourist city in southern Hannan, have also been halted as residents prepared for the storm.The Hainan provincial government said they would spare no efforts in protecting the safety of fishermen and tourists, as well as strengthening the monitoring of reservoirs.

BELGRADE, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday met with Serbian President Boris Tadic, vowing to add new impetus to the traditional friendship between China and Serbia."I am here to help realize the consensus between the two heads of states, pushing forward our strategic partnership and traditional friendship," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), who arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for a three-day visit.Wu is the first NPC Standing Committee chairman to visit Serbia over the past decade. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand more than 9 percent in 2010, Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), said Friday.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China, the central bank, made the remarks in an interview with China Reform magazine, which is posted on the SAFE website Friday.China's GDP grew 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010 from the same period of last year.Yi said China's economic growth rate will eventually slow down because its economic base is expanding, while the country's development faces huge pressure in fields of environmental protection, resources and energy."The restriction caused by environmental factors has been unprecedented, such as underground water, air, and carbon emission," Yi said.Yi said the priority of China's economy is the quality of the growth."That's why we have to restructure and transform growth modes -- for improving the growth quality and the efficiency," Yi said.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's announcement that it would allow more flexibility in its yuan exchange rate meant an end to the crisis-mode policy the government took to cushion the blow from the global financial crisis, experts interviewed by Xinhua said Monday.The People's Bank of China, also known as the central bank, said Saturday that it decided to proceed even further with the reform of the Renminbi exchange rate to add flexibility to the RMB exchange rate.The decision was made in view of the recent economic situation and financial market developments at home and abroad, as well as due to the balance of payments situation in China, the central bank said. However, it ruled out a one-off revaluation of the yuan as there was no basis for large changes in its value.Experts noted it was the correct time for the exchange rate policy to return to its normal state, given the consolidated economic recovery, large decline in trade surplus and more balanced international payments.Zhao Xijun, deputy dean of the School of Finance with the Renmin University of China, said the normalization of China's exchange rate policy would intensify China's economic connection to the global economy and help promote the country's economic restructuring and adjustments of its development mode.China moved to a managed floating exchange rate regime in July 2005 which was based on market supply and demand and referencing a basket of currencies. The reform of the RMB exchange rate has made continuous progress since then, producing the anticipated results and playing a positive role.The financial crisis which broke out in the United States in 2008 shook the global financial markets and dented investment confidence. BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities on Sunday said the heat that had been bearing down on many parts of the country would continue for a few more days.Sweltering weather, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, could be expected in at least 13 provinces and regions across China, the National Meteorological Center said.In Beijing, the local meteorological bureau upgraded the heat alert on Sunday from blue to yellow, two steps below the top alert.
