SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scripps Health revealed Tuesday plans for major new construction projects and buildings at its hospitals in San Diego County. The master plan includes flexible design spaces for evolving technology in patient rooms, operating rooms, laboratories and diagnostic centers, Scripps officials said.More care will be delivered on an outpatient basis at clinics and other facilities so Scripps can use acute care hospitals to care for the most seriously ill patients, said the company."This is our vision to build the health care system of the future - starting today," said Scripps president and CEO Chris van Gorder. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steve Fiorina has been at 10News for 35 years and, in that time, has covered some incredible victories. San Diego applauded when the Padres went to the World Series in '84, facing the Detroit Tigers. And again in '98 to take on the New York Yankees. No championship rings but the Pads made it to the grand stage. The Chargers hit the pinnacle with their '94 season, Super Bowl XXIX in Miami, January, 1995; San Francisco 49ers versus the San Diego Chargers.10News put out the word that we would simulate a road trip to Miami, flying into six cities you would pass through if driving the route. Chargers fans meeting us all along the way.People lining the street to welcome us and a massive rally at the high school gym.And the Chargers fight song rang out, too. The refrain repeated the next day in New Orleans.Final destination: Miami. A lopsided loss; 49ers trounced our guys, 49 to 26, but it was an electrifying time for Chargers fans.Every year the Padres home opener is a day-long party. Before Petco Park was built, we flew to Baltimore to illustrate the charm of Camden Yards; the template for our new ballpark.A personal thrill--seeing Tony Gwynn presented his 6th Silver Slugger award from another Hall of Famer; my boyhood baseball idol, the Cardinals' Stan the Man Musial.Last year, watching as a crowd of fans paid tribute to Mr. Padre. Tony's statue now gracing the Lake Poway Park near where he made his home.San Diego cherishes it's military; the Padres inviting and saluting our service men and women. And who can forget the pageantry of Opening Day at Del Mar Racetrack?Comic Con is magnificent! Almost a week of fun and fantasy every summer.Let's go back to 1985, when the Christian Emergency Relief Team out of Carlsbad invited us along on a mission of mercy. Flying to Honduras, along the border during the Nicaraguan War. These Angels of the Jungle built a hospital and treated these fragile refugees. There are angels out in force every spring at the Embarcadero Marina Park North. The Celebration of Champions honors the doctors and nurses at Rady Children's Hospital and raises the spirits of hundreds of children and their families fighting to live healthy, happy lives. Sports figures and media types running with these champions and honoring those tearfully paying homage to the ones who've passed. It's an emotional day.4th of July is a blast! Thousands descend on Scripps Ranch each year. Snow Summit was a bit colder but a fabulous time as well. Finally we remember a little Lakeside girl: an Angel in Heaven, Hero on Earth, Forever in our Hearts. Kiera Larsen was ten years old when the family SUV began rolling down the driveway toward her playmates. She ran over and pushed two younger friends to safety but was crushed to death herself. Kiera was recognized with a Carnegie Hero medal and a personal letter from then President Barack Obama. We celebrate Kiera. 2918

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University released its plan Monday relating to holiday travel during the pandemic. It comes as students are getting ready to travel home for the holidays in a few weeks. The policies apply to students living on campus and those with in-person classes.Roughly 2,100 students live on-campus, and about 2,200 students are enrolled in an in-person class or participating in on-campus research, according to SDSU. There is a crossover between the groups.Students living on campus can choose to stay on campus over Thanksgiving. Meal plans and other student services will be available during the break.Students who choose to go home and see family have an option. The plan says they “may choose to remain at home for the rest of the fall semester and complete the last two weeks of the term remotely.”Those that travel and return to on-campus housing will be tested for COVID-19 immediately upon returning and then tested again, five to seven days later. Those taking in-person classes will be asked to test weekly upon returning; they are currently required to test every 14-days. Those taking in-person classes are being encouraged to avoid holiday travel. The notice to students goes on to say:"Each of us must continue to be very thoughtful and careful, even if the effects of COVID-19 seem invisible or have not touched some of us personally. Several religious and spiritual observations are before us in the months ahead, and it is disappointing that we will not be able to celebrate in person many of our traditions with our loved ones in ways we have in the past. Limiting travel is an important way to keep our community safe and reduce the potential for COVID-19 transmission." 1722

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted Tuesday to expand the social host ordinance to include marijuana and controlled substances. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. RELATED: What to know about the ‘social host ordinance' if you're hosting a party this holiday season“The addition of marijuana and controlled substances to the Social Host Ordinance gives law enforcement a tool to deter conduct that puts our kids at risk. Working with Police Chief David Nisleit, we will educate the public about this ordinance, and hold accountable those who choose to ignore it,” Elliott continued. According to the city, Proposition 64 opened the door for increased marijuana by minors. “Sometimes underage use is assisted by well-meaning adults who mistakenly believe its dangers decrease when the use occurs in environments they host,” the city said in a news release. 1199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's just 5-years-old, but Faith Perkins is now a published author.Faith and her mother Neka wrote the book 'Faith and Trinity the Unicorn', inspired by the loss of Trinity, Faith's older sister."My husband and I lost Trinity prematurely at 24 weeks in May 2012, of course, that was a devastation, it hurt us, but our faith prompted us to try again, and that's when Faith was born," said Neka. In the book, Faith travels the world with her sister Trinity, who is a unicorn. Faith explains how she and her mother wrote the book together, "What we would do is me and her would sit down, and she would tell me what it would be like if we were playing with each other and whatever I would tell her she would write down on a piece of paper."Neka and Faith hope the book will help others coping with loss. "I hope to inspire so many other individuals to talk about it, it's not easy, it's painful," said Neka. But Neka says writing the book with Faith has helped her heal and find some closure. "I can only imagine what life would have been like with her here, so this allows us to keep the hope alive," said Neka. For Faith, getting the book published is only the beginning. She's using the proceeds to help the homeless, help kids with field trip expenses, and to donate gifts to local NICU’s.You can purchase the book at Barnes & Noble stores in San Diego, as well as on the Barnes & Noble website. The book is also available on Amazon Kindle. 1471
