VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A backyard workshop in Vista caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to Vista Fire officials. Neighbors said they saw thick black smoke towering into the sky and heard almost a dozen explosions.Neighbor John Ploetz said it sounded, "like a bomb, people up the street heard it.""It takes a minute you know, your brain goes oh it's probably fine, or he's welding you know and then I see there's flames, and no firemen here, and the fence is on fire, I better call 9-1-1," Ploetz said he grabbed his garden hose and worked to contain the fire. He wet down nearby foliage and put out small spot fires on the outside of the fence.Fire officials said the fire started around 12:32 p.m. and arrived at the home in the 1000 block of Ora Avo Drive in minutes. Ploetz said what he did was something anyone would do and he was concerned the fire would spread to other homes nearby. He was shocked when a pine tree burned up in seconds, "it just whoosh! Went up like a torch, it was loud, that was before the firemen got here."The workshop contained propane tanks, and tools for metal art that the homeowner creates as a hobby. The family was at church when the fire started and were thankful no one was hurt. Among the valuables they lost were three boats and a motor home.Firefighters are still investigating the cause. 1340
WASHINGTON — Control of the Senate won’t be decided until the new year after Republicans won a seat in Alaska.Neither party is able to lock the majority until January Senate runoffs in Georgia. Republicans added to their ranks Wednesday when Alaska GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan defeated Al Gross, an independent running as a Democrat. Sullivan's win means the Republican caucus are guaranteed 50 of the 100 seats in the Senate chamber. As of Wednesday, Democrats only controlled 48 seats. With Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Republicans are still short of the 51 seats they need for majority control. That's because the vice president of the party in power, which on Jan. 20 will be Kamala Harris, is the Senate tie-breaker on votes. That means if Republicans only have 50 seats, Democrats can control the Senate.Control of the Senate will come down to a pair of run-off elections in Georgia, which will be held on Jan. 5. In a regularly-scheduled race, Republican Sen. David Perdue, currently seeking re-election for the first time, nearly missed out on the 50% needed in order to avoid a runoff. With 49.7% of the vote, he'll need to fend off Democrat Jon Ossoff to serve a second term. The second race is a special election to replace Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired due to health problems in 2019. Kelly Loeffler, who Gov. Brian Kemp tapped as Isakson's temporary replacement upon his retirement, will square off with Rev. Raphael Warnock. 1472
Walgreens has finally figured out a way to buy Rite Aid -- or about half of it, at least. The pharmacy giant said Tuesday that federal regulators have accepted its .4 billion deal to buy 1,932 Rite Aid stores. That will leave Rite Aid with about 2,600 stores once the deal is finished. The purchase marks the end of a two-years-long fight for Walgreens, which initially tried to buy Rite Aid outright for billion in October 2015.The merger agreement faced intense scrutiny from the start, since it would have left the United States with just two major pharmacy chains: Walgreens and CVS.The agreement was reworked several times over the past few years as Walgreens scaled back the number of stores it intended to purchase. In June, the company tried for a .2 billion deal that would have handed it 2,186 Rite Aid stores.Walgreens recently revised its deal again, said company spokesman Michael Polzin. Polzin said that the waiting period for review by the Federal Trade Commission expired last night at midnight, effectively giving Walgreens the regulatory clearance it needs to move forward. The Rite Aid pharmacies that Walgreens plans to buy will eventually be rebranded as Walgreens stores. But it won't happen all at once.Polzin said the company will begin buying Rite Aids in October, adding that it expects to finish doing so in the spring of 2018.Rite Aid stock was down nearly 7% in premarket trading Tuesday morning -- a change from Monday, when it rose as investors hoped for a better deal.Walgreens stock, meanwhile, was up 2% Tuesday before open. 1572
Virgin Galactic is preparing to land among the stars. On Wednesday, Virgin Galactic said they were working on its final preparations at its base in New Mexico as the VSS Unity is scheduled to launch into space from Spaceport America sometime in the fall. The company said the ship would be crewed by two pilots and several research payloads in the cabin.Virgin Galactic says its top priority is safety, so they want to make sure the pilots are prepared for the task at hand.To do just that, they will be using VMS Eve as an in-flight simulator. The pilots will use Eve to practice the identical approach and landing pattern since it's similar to Unity's, Chief Pilot Dave Mackay stated."The cockpit structure of Eve is almost identical to that of Unity: the same pilot seats and windows, as well as very similar flight controls and instruments," Mackay said in the press release. The company will go through a full, planned rehearsal before the VSS Unity takes flight. 973
