BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao has urged Party schools at all levels to play more important roles in the Party and country's development.     Hu, also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark when he gave a keynote speech to a meeting attended by delegates of the Party schools across the country in Beijing on Monday. "Party committees at all levels should regard the Party school construction as one of the fundamental works."     Hu urged Party schools to adopt reforms and innovative policies in improving their qualities of education.     Party schools should act as a main channel for the Party to train officials on a large scale and increase their abilities to take both foreign and domestic situations into policy making, Hu said.     Party schools should also help the officials improve their abilities to govern the Party itself and resolve its internal problems, he added.     He said that Party schools should act as an important theoretical academy of the Communist Party.     Party schools are expected to provide theories of socialism with Chinese characteristics and make the theories understandable, acceptable and adoptable for the officials.     Innovation in socialism theories should be an essential job for the Party schools, Hu said in the speech, adding that the schools should also unite theories with practice and serve the Party and governments at all levels in decision making.     Another important role that the Party schools should play is imparting modern scientific knowledge, Hu said.     Party schools should cultivate officials with more loyalty to the Party, he said.     Xi Jinping, president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, chaired the meeting. Senior leaders Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang also attended the meeting.

BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday that increased environment protection efforts would help significantly to boost domestic demand and open new economic growth points. China would continue to make environmental protection a priority to benefit the people and ensure a stable economy, he told the annual meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).     China faced difficult tasks in protecting its environment as itwas the world's biggest developing country with huge economic growth potential. CHENGDU, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao extended Lunar New Year greetings on behalf of the government and joined holiday festivities in quake-hit Sichuan Province in southwest China over the weekend.     Wen visited villagers, students, medical workers and police in Beichuan, Deyang and Wenchuan, which were among the worst-hit areas in the 8.0-magnitude quake that struck on May 12.     It was Wen's seventh visit to the province since the quake, which was centered in Wenchuan County. The earthquake left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless.     Wen started with a visit to Wang Chengyi's home on Saturday afternoon. Wang, a middle-aged villager of Qiang nationality, lives in a newly-built Qiang village in Beichuan County. More than 1,000 of the school's 2,900 students and teachers died in the earthquake.     On Sunday morning, Wen visited new homes in Deyang City's Xinyu Village. He watched a lion dance and played table tennis with villagers.     Wen also visited medical workers at the Deyang City People's Hospital and extended televised greetings to police and firefighters in Sichuan.     At Dongfang Steam Turbine Works, a large state-owned enterprise, he urged employees to have confidence in Dongfang's development in spite of the quake destruction and global financial crisis.     Wen then visited Yingxiu Town in Wenchuan County, the epicenter of the quake. In a community of makeshift houses, Wen went into a kitchen shared by the Wu's and two other families and joined them in preparing dinner for the Spring Festival's Eve. He even cooked a dish of Hui Guo Rou (Sauteed sliced pork with pepper) for them. SHUIFU, Yunnan, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Jinsha River in south China was blocked on Sunday to make way for construction of a new hydropower project on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.     At a cost of 43.4 billion yuan (about 6.3 billion U.S. dollars), the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Project is expected to be completed by 2015. It will be able to generate 30.7 billion kw hours of electricity a year.     "Electricity generated by hydropower stations will mainly be sold to China's eastern, southern and central regions," said Li Yong'an, general manager of the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation. "Sichuan and Yunnan provinces will also benefit from it." Workers cheer for the damming of the Jinsha River in the construction of the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station which is the third largest of its kind in China.     In addition to providing power, the project will play a role in flood control and farmland irrigation.     About 125,100 people from three counties of Yunnan Province and three counties of Sichuan Province have been resettled to make way for the project.     The Xiangjiaba project is one of a series of hydropower plants China plans to build on the Jinsha River to supply electricity to its economically more developed coastal regions.     The 2,290-kilometer-long Jinsha River, a tributary of Yangtze River, originates in Tanggula Range and flows through Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan.     Water is mostly stored in the river's middle and lower reaches where China plans to build 12 hydropower stations to share a 59.08- million-kilowatts installed capacity. ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Ethiopian Federal Council Speaker Degefi Bula, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday afternoon arrived here to begin an official visit to Ethiopia on the third leg of his five-nation Africa tour.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the rapid growth of the China-Ethiopia relations in the past 38 years since the two nations forged diplomatic relations, noting that the bilateral cooperation between the two nations have yielded remarkable achievements in fields such as economy and trade, culture, public health and tourism. It is the first visit to the AU headquarters by a Chinese top legislator.     Wu arrived here after he concluded his official visit to Algeria and Gabon. After Ethiopia, he will travel to Madagascar and Seychelles.
