The annual preseason event will take place Saturday, Jan. 11.The Friar Faithful can enjoy concessions and a Taste of Petco Park sampling on the main concourse, a KidsFest area with games, a wiffle ball field, and a display with the new brown and gold uniforms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of children and their families enjoyed a Christmas miracle Saturday, as Toys for Joy delivered smiles across the county.About 8,000 - 9,000 people made their way through the lines outside four locations packed with toys as part of the event, at Lincoln High School, Cajon Valley Middle School, Castle Park High School, and Guajome Park Academy in Vista.At Lincoln High School, some families camped out for the event, waking up to toys and more generous donations. Every child under the age of 11 will walk away with a brand new toy. Families got their own holiday miracle, as other stations offer gently used clothing and also bring home groceries.Toys for Joy has been a free community event for 23 years and is hosted by The Rock Church. 776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are increasing calls for more police oversight. In San Diego, a proposed measure would create a new independent body to investigate alleged misconduct. Both San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District Attorney Summer Stephan have pledged support for a new body to hold police accountable.Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice said they welcome the support, but there is still some skepticism.“It seems very reactionary after all of this pressure that now they come out and support. This ballot measure is not a new thing. This has been proposed since 2012,” Talbert said.There is currently a Citizens Review Board on Police Practices, but Talbert said it is far from independent. “Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Talbert said. The new proposed commission would have the ability to investigate cases. It would also have independent lawyers and subpoena power. The head of the San Diego POA said the support a measure on the ballot to let the people decide what is best for police oversight. “I think if people go into things with an investigative mind trying to find the truth, I think that any of these things can be very effective,” said POA President Jack Schaeffer. Talbert said even if passed, the city council still has to write an ordinance and some of the language could change. That is something she would not agree with.“We know that this is a true well-rounded, a true balance, and a truly comprehensive model,” Talbert said. 1598

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need.
